Body Shop skincare routine – what to buy for Mother’s Day
I was 13 when I first bought makeup at the shop. It was the 90s, so makeup meant Heather Shimmer lipstick, matte brown lip liner and ghostly pale face powder. I looked like an extra from the Addams Family, but I felt like a woman, especially when I discovered skincare for the first time at The Body Shop. I didn’t have a Body Shop skincare routine or any idea what my skin type was – I had teenage skin and a paper round allowance.
A trip to the Body Shop was an aromatic trip to heaven, and it soon became my favoured visit with friends every weekend. I tried on the fragranced hand creams, different array of eyeshadow and lip liners and treated myself to body butter and bath bombs.
Then the noise of the naughties drowned out the brick and mortar brands with online shopping paving the way to a whole new selection of affordable skincare. Social media heeled the barrage of gimmicky skincare fads and with influencers plugging their own merch too, I quickly became overwhelmed. My thirties were my ‘baby years’ (I had four babies in my thirties) so my skincare routine took a nosedive and since then I have stuck to serums which help me look like I’ve slept for more than a few minutes in the last five years.
After a long hiatus, I found The Body Shop again and I truly forgot how amazing it is. The Body Shop online took me straight back to that 13-year-old bright-eyed brunette, searching for her own identity and immersing herself in makeup and skincare for the first time.
Now I’m in my 40s, I try hard to have a basic skincare at the best of times and even though I rarely get it right, I have tried to look after my skin over the years.

My everyday skin care routine at home
I have to admit; I am not the best at keeping up with my skincare routine, but over the years, there are a few things I do (almost every day/night) to ensure my skin doesn’t age prematurely (the fine lines have already got to me, though.)
I take my makeup off before I go to bed
I only started religiously taking my makeup off in my thirties, but doing so has helped to ensure I have softer, cleaner skin when I wake up in the morning. I don’t wear foundation and I only use concealer on certain parts of my skin (especially around my eye area), so it’s important I wash the concealer off to prevent pore clogging.
I use a cleansing wipe to wash my makeup off and a hot wet 100% cotton towel to wipe it off
I use a cleansing wipe which I can lather on my skin in a gentle circular motion to wash my eye makeup off, so I’m not dragging on the skin. The cleanse ends with a hot damp towel, which feels like a mini spa facial. I place the towel over my face and press gently for a few seconds (which feels amazing). Then I gently wipe and repeat until all the makeup is off.
I always use a serum on my skin
Using a serum before you put on your moisturiser just helps to keep things properly moisturised. Now that I always use a serum, I find it is not enough to put moisturiser on. I have combination skin, so some moisturisers are too drying and some are too oily. But the serum feels just right on my skin.
I do a mini facial workout before bed
I always make sure I use lip balm regularly
I try to keep my lips as moisturised as possible, and they’ve helped to stay plump in my forties. I’ve been doing this since my twenties and I feel like the work has paid off, although during this winter weather, they’ve taken quite a beating! (I always have parched skin in the winter).

What I should include in my step-by-step skin care routine
I’m slack with SPF and often forget to add it to my skincare routine before I go out. The only way to get around this for me is to buy a moisturiser which has SPF* in it. I’ve found some great ones from The Body Shop, which I’ll list below.

First impressions of the Moses Basket Bassinet with Stand
My first impression of the Noah Pod® is that it looks so stylish. The handwoven wicker adds a fairy tale touch to the Moses Basket. Baby Amelia looked safe and comfortable in her own little rocking baby crib.
Was the Clair De Lune Grey Wicker Noah Pod® Over the Moon with Grey Stand easy to use/put together?
It was very easy to set up. The Moses basket comes ready with a mattress and you can put together the rocking stand in minutes. The inserts are easy to place inside the basket and they felt very secure, so I wasn’t worried about excess material hanging over the baby.
How to use the Clair De Lune Grey Wicker Noah Pod® Over the Moon with Grey Stand
You place baby in the basket when they are sleeping or resting and you can rock baby to sleep using the stand’s rocking motion. You can also carry the Noah Pod® around the house as long as the baby isn’t inside. The basket is not designed for baby to be carried around in.
Was the Moses Basket and stand easy to use/comfortable?
The Noah Pod® was very comfortable for Amelia and she loved sleeping in the basket, often for long periods. Little Angels also provided us with some lovely linen sheets and blankets which are very soft and high quality, so they helped provide Amelia with good quality sleep.
What are the pros of using the Moses basket and stand?
The basket is light with long handles to help you move around the house, so baby can sleep in any room you are stationed. The stand rocks the basket gently without waking baby up, but if they’re unsettled, the rocking motion helps baby go back to sleep.
The premium quality design, comfortable inserts, and easy-to-assemble stand makes the Moses Basket a doddle to use, especially after birth when mum needs to sit/lay in certain positions in the house. You can place the Moses Basket by the bed and there’s no need to get up. It’s the right height for lifting baby in and out of the pod while you’re in bed.
What are the cons of using the Moses basket with stand?
Sometimes the handle straps can get in the way when you take baby in and out of the basket. They are perhaps a bit too long.
The baby can only really use the Moses basket until around five months, depending on their size, so it has a short shelf life before baby needs to move onto a larger bedside crib or a cot. The basket can become a little narrow, which may not be so comfortable for them when they are older.
Are Moses Baskets with Stands worth the money?
Moses baskets for babies are the perfect transition from womb to cot and I’ve used them for all four of my children. They’re small enough to mimic the tiny space of the womb so that baby feels safe and not overwhelmed by the grandeur of a cot so soon after birth. They’re normally cheaper than other baby beds, but that is because the period in which the baby can use them is shorter. But they are definitely worth the money.
The Moses Basket is easy to use. Simply place the basket on the stand (make sure it slots into place properly) and then baby is ready to go. The inserts are simple to take off and wash. The handles can sometimes impede carrying the basket around or taking baby out, but it’s only a minor issue.

The Moses Basket helps baby transition from womb to bassinet with as little trauma as possible. We have always used Moses Baskets for the first four to five months because we found it the easiest to help baby sleep at night. With three of my four births involving some birth trauma, I particularly found the Moses basket useful because I could place it wherever I was stationed and recovering.

What is my overall opinion of the Clair de Lune Grey Wicker Noah Pod® Over the Moon Wicker Moses Basket with Rocker Stand?
The Wicker Noah Pod® is a premium quality Moses basket with an affordable price tag. Amelia slept comfortably in it for five months and, even though the handles were sometimes a bit of a nuisance, all the material used was such high quality that I never feared for her safety.
Considering the time baby spends sleeping in a Moses basket, it was worth the price. We added black and white patterns so baby could play in the basket too. Perhaps some lower-priced options could offer the same functionality, but if it’s premium quality you’re looking for, then this is the basket for you.

First impressions of the SnüzPod 4
The SnuzPod4 is well built, comfortable, and easy to use. The crib allows for mum to be very close to baby during the night by using the zipped/unzipped and flexible sides. The mattresses are soft and comfortable and the material is breathable and malleable, which you can also take off and clean easily.
Was SnüzPod 4 easy to use/put together?
I had to (well hubby had to) ponder over which parts went where, but after taking a few moments to read the instructions, the build was relatively quick and straightforward. The box contains easy-to-understand instructions that easily explains the process.
The SnüzPod can be used in different ways. Below is more information on how to use SnuzPod 4.
Bedside Mode
For parents who would like easy access to baby without having to get out of bed, then you can convert the SnuzPod4 into Bedside Mode where you unzip one side so that it rests by the end/side of your bed/mattress. Not all beds are of equal size, so the manufacturers have ensured there is sufficient flexibility to change the resting height of the SnuzPod. This alongside some extra straps to secure the SnuzPod tight to the bed ensures there are no gaps in between and baby is kept safe.
When attached to the bed, the SnuzPod4 has a permanent half-height wall to meet the new bedside crib standard BS EN1130:2019.
To fit the straps to your bed follow the instructions below:
Remove the metal pole from the zip down wall. Leaving the pole in can be hazardous but keep the metal pole attached in the wall furthest away from your bed.
Release the velcro tabs and lower the zips fully.
Fold the zip down wall down, tucking it in between the crib frame and the adult mattress
Ensure your mattress is level with the zip down wall of the SnuzPod4
Tighten straps to secure the SnuzPod4 to your bed.
Ensure the bassinet sits fully down on the stand and is not resting on any part of your bed
Do not over-tighten the strap, as this may cause the stand to tilt. Ensure the stand is flush with the bed frame / base
Check the tightness of the attachment system before each use by pulling the bedside sleeper in a direction away from the adult bed
Tuck any excess strap under your bed base away from babies and children
Ensure there are no gaps between the SnuzPod4 and your bed
During use, always ensure your bedding, sheets, blankets etc do not enter or cover the inside of the crib.
Standalone and lift off bassinet
The second option is to have a standalone and/or lift off bassinet as well as a rocking stand too. The sides can be zipped back up and the pole reinserted to form a standard bassinet for baby to sleep safely in the parents’ same room or in their own nursery.
What is the difference between the SnuzPod 4 and the SnuzPod 3?
So, what is the difference between a Snuz Pod 3 and 4? Below is a chart that shows the difference between the SnuzPod3 and the SnuzPod4.
The SnuzPod4 is compact enough to help our newborn feel like she is still in a cocoon when she sleeps, but spacious and breathable enough to not feel too small or claustrophobic. The ComfortAir breathable mesh helps our baby to feel comfortable when sleeping and when placed in the SnuzPod4 already sleeping, our baby continues to sleep well for a few hours. She also seems to enjoy relaxing in the SnuzPod4 while awake too. We’ve placed some black, white and red flashcards inside the SnuzPod4 so that she has something to look at while she’s awake. We always remove these when she is asleep for safety.

The SnuzPod4 is a great first bed for baby. Here are some pros to using the SnuzPod4 as baby’s first bed.
The SnuzPod4 is multifunctional and easy to use.
You don’t have to worry about buying a separate mattress as this comes with. Plus, the mattress is soft and comfortable too.
It’s a ‘3-in-1’ crib, meaning you can use the SnuzPod4 as a standalone bassinet which is rockable or you can attach it to the side of your bed for easy access and closeness, which is also rockable, much like a Moses basket.

The mesh material means that you can see baby from the side but also baby can breathe easily

You have space under the bassinet to store baby’s things – we store her nappy changing stuff so we don’t have to venture far.
It’s easy to build and the materials are premium quality
It’s bigger than a Moses basket, which means baby can use it for longer. It is recommended baby can use the SnuzPod4 for up to six months old, but you may stretch it further depending on the size of your baby.
The stand is foldable, so you can tuck it away when you’re not using it.
What are the cons of using the new SnüzPod 4?
The SnuzPod4 is heavy, so it’s not so easy to move around because of its solid wood frame. It’s tough to transport from room to room for napping.
If you have a bed with a frame that sticks out further than the mattress, then there will be a gap beween the SnuzPod and your bed. This prevents you from using it properly as a co-sleeper, much like other co-sleeping bassinet
The SnuzPod4 is argued to be expensive at £199.95, however the SnuzPod4 is premium quality and highly functional so the price is justified.
What would SnüzPod 4 bassinet be useful for?
The SnuzPod4 is most suitable for parents who prefer to keep baby as close to them as possible during sleeping times and still have the flexibility to convert the bassinet into a standalone crib. I would say it’s the perfect bed for breastfeeding mums because we can slide our baby over to us for their nightly feeds.
Is SnüzPod 4 worth the money?
So, is the SnuzPod4 worth it? Considering the quality of the materials and the overall sleek design, as well as of course its 3-in-1 functionality, the SnuzPod4 is worth the higher end price tag. It’s very well made and will last for many years, so you can pass it down from baby to baby too. Plus you’ll get extras on your first order in the shop too!

What are Group 1 2 3 car seats?
Group 1 2 3 car seats are forward-facing car seats where the toddler uses the seat’s integral five-point safety harness initially or an impact cushion until they are 15kg (Group 1 Isofix car seat) and then uses the car seat’s five-point seatbelt belt to secure the child and the seat.
The seat then converts into a high-backed booster seat when your child is older and bigger and the five-point harness is no longer used. The child is secured using the car’s own seat belt.
Car seats can come with an Isofix base which is clicked onto a mechanism on the seat of cars that offer Isofix options.

We couldn’t find a car seat safety rating but you do get 4 years warranty once you’ve registered your product online and kept your proof of purchase for any future claim. If you register within 28 days of receiving the item, Ickle Bubba will extend your standard warranty to 4 years from the date of purchase at no extra cost.
The Ickle Bubba Solar car seat is only suitable for use in vehicles fitted with a three-point retractable safety belt or Isofix attachments.
For Group 1 car seats always give preference to using the rear seats even if the front seat is permitted. Check your vehicle manual for advice on fitting your car seat in the front of the vehicle. Airbags can cause injury so do not use the car seat on a passenger seat fitted with a front airbag.

How do you use the Ickle Bubba Solar Car Seat with the Isofix Base?
Group 1 fitting instructions (9-18kg)
The Ickle Bubba Solar Group 1 2 3 Car Seat can be installed using Isofix and a top tether strap.
Pull the red button out and the Isofix connector will come out automatically (see image above and B-1 below)
Unlock the Isofix connectors of the car seat by pushing the Isofix point release button (IS) (B-2)
Open the plastic panel to get the top tether out and close the panel (B-3)
Hook the top tether strap on the anchor bracket and fasten the belt tightly (B-4)
Place the car seat on the vehicle seat and connect the Isofix connectors to the vehicle Isofix attachments (B-5). There will be an indicator visible on the connector
Attach the Isofix connectors until the Isofix connection indicators (16) turn red to green and a click is heard (B-6). This will mean the seat is locked into position
Once in place pull the Isofix adjustor position until tight and the car seat is tight against the vehicle backrest
There are three reclining positions
By pulling the red recline lever up, you can choose from the following positions for your child:
upright
mid-recline
full-recline
The top tether is located at the top of the seat back. Extend the length by squeezing the tension indicating adjustor. Locate the vehicle adjustment point which may be found on the parcel shelf, at the back of the seat or the rear boot area and hook on.
Tighten the tether strap (B-7) until the adjustor indicator shows green (B-8)
Placing your child in the car seat
Loosen the harness and press on the central adjuster button (21) (F-1). Pull on the harness shoulder straps (19)
Your child’s head should sit directly in the middle of the headrest and the sides of the headrest should sit just above the child’s shoulders.
To adjust the headrest pull the headrest adjuster (1) to release the latch from the back of the seat. Pull the headrest up and locate the dial into one of the slots on the headrest (F-2) F-3)
Ensure the headrest does not obstruct the child’s shoulders. Also, make sure the top of the child’s head does not go over the top of the headrest
Open the harness buckle by pressing firmly on the red button in the centre of the buckle (F-5). Spread apart the shoulder straps to buckle retainers (10) to enable the child to be placed (F-6).
Place the child into the car seat, ensuring they are seated upright against the backrest. Pass the child’s arms through each of the shoulder straps (F-7) while bringing together the harness connectors (31). Align them together and insert them into the buckle until you hear a “click” (F-8)
Pull firmly on the harness adjustment strap (26) at the front of the seat. It’s not necessary to press on the central adjuster button (F-9)
Fitting the side impact protection cushions
Line up the two tabs located on the Side Impact Protection panels to the two holes located on the side of the car seat (see A-1 in the image below)
Push inwards and upwards until the panel clicks into place (see A-2 below)
If you are short of space there is the option to only fit the side closest to the vehicle door.

Did baby seem comfortable in the car seat?
Our daughter was very comfortable in the car seat, although she is too big for the additional neck and headrest padding. We had to remove it, but we’re keeping it for our next baby.
The group 123 car seat can recline in three positions so you can manoeuvre the seat to make it more comfortable for the baby during travel. When it’s upright our daughter’s head does tilt forward when she’s asleep, but to fix this you recline the seat back and it makes for more comfortable napping in the car seat.
What are the pros of using the Ickle Bubba Solar Car Seat with Isofix?
The 123 group car seat has a very premium feel and comfort. The harness can be adjusted and fastened easily and it was easy to clip to the Isofix base in the car. The Isofix is very simple to use and there are additional reclining positions which is a bonus. Our daughter could see everything out of the car and my ten year old could lift and carry the seat for us. All added bonuses.
What are the cons of using Ickle Bubba 123 car seat?
The car seat comes with the Isofix attached and we’re not sure if this can be removed yet. The recliner handle is supported only by a spring visible under the seat, which may tear easily. The padding is not a favourite for my daughter. As she is 21 months I have to remove the padding as it stops her tilting her head back to rest. The seat is quite heavy and the extra side protection is a bonus but it does also increase the space used by the seat.

The car seat is suitable for long road trips as it’s very comfy for your toddler who has just grown out of their Group 0 car seat. The car seat will also grow with your child until they are four years old so it is long-lasting and space-saving.

Is an infant car seat safer than a convertible car seat?
Infant-only car seats face only face the rear seat of the car and are intended for newborns up to approximately 9 months, depending on weight. The weight generally ranges from 4 to 5 pounds to around 30 – 35 pounds. The height limit is also around 30 – 55 inches.
Once the baby exceeds the limits of a car seat they will transition to a convertible all-in-one car seat. A convertible car seat can start off rear-facing and then convert to a forward-facing from when the child is around 40 pounds or more.
Both car seats are safe and designed for the baby’s specific height and weight provided they are rear-facing and installed properly.
What is the difference between a Group 0 car seat and Group 1 2 3 car seat?
Group 0 car seats are rear-facing car seats for the baby until 9kg in weight. They are then turned forward-facing until the baby is around 18kg.
The baby then transitions to Group 1 2 3 car seats, starting with Group 1 which are forward-facing and the child uses the car seats integral harness or impact cushion until they are 15kg. They then use the car’s seat belt which secures the child and the seat.
You then get Group 2 and 3 car seats which are high-backed booster seats, although they don’t need to have a back. The back can be removed once the child reaches 22kg, but it’s advised to keep it on in the seat.

Why I decided to try an orthopaedic pillow
For 11 years, I have been working in my home office, sitting in front of a computer for long periods without an orthopaedic pillow. I’ve experienced a crick in my neck in the past year, and my back seems knotted and stiff. Sometimes the pain is intense I suffer from headaches. I know it’s because of my way of life; I do the school run in the car and then I’m at my desk when I have time to work. I run after a toddler monkey and I have two school-aged boys who seem to have bundles of energy. Finding time and energy to exercise is a chore amongst itself and I love my job too much to give up sitting at my desk.
I often dream of a masseur in the office, otherwise, I fear my head will fall off my body. I have voiced my concerns to my family, and they suggested I try an orthopedic pillow for neck pain. I had heard of the orthopedic memory foam pillow many times, but I’ve never really thought about trying an orthopedic support pillow for neck pain. When I got home, I did some research on the different orthopedic neck pillows available for those who suffer from back and neck pain. An article on webmd.com confirmed the pillow you choose to use determines your sleep quality and comfort during the day.
What are orthopaedic pillows?
Orthopaedic pillows are ergonomic and therapeutic pillows to help relieve issues relating to sleep like apnoea, snoring, insomnia, neck arthritis or back pains. It offers you a much better sleep quality and a cosier sleeping experience than normal pillows.
Cervical Support Pillows
My upper back muscles are constantly strained and my bed pillow does nothing to relieve this discomfort.
It turned out that it was because of the improper position of my spine in the cervical region while I was sleeping. My head was at a different level because of the regular pillow, and my neck was crooked. Also, I am one of those stomach sleepers, and this negatively affects me as well. Sleeping on my side or on my back is always uncomfortable.

A cervical pillow aims to provide support, and a person can use a cervical support pillow alongside other therapeutic approaches to help relieve neck pain and sort out spinal alignment. A person’s sleeping position may affect the type of cervical orthopedic pillow a person uses however, so make sure you go for the correct one.
But how did I know which one to go for? I wanted actual opinions of people about the type of pillow I needed. For a week, I searched various forums and websites where people shared their feedback on the use of orthopaedic pillows. I found out many other people are suffering from the same problem I had. The orthopaedic pillow really helped relieve headaches and cervical pain for some of them. If changing the pillow did not help, they recommended seeing a doctor because there may be an underlying and more serious issue.
Interestingly, the orthopaedic pillow helps to solve not only neck pain problems but also many other ones. In their reviews, people shared they got rid of snoring, which affected their family life and their health state. Pregnant women claimed the orthopaedic pillow had become their best assistant at night.
When you sleep in the supine position on such a product, your spine and neck are in the right position. When you sleep on your side, the orthopaedic pillow should be more under your neck than your head. Your chin should be kept straight, in a neutral position. The foam padding helps to maintain the correct posture.
Changing your habit of sleeping in a certain position is sometimes very difficult. So you can help yourself with a memory foam pillow. They come in different shapes and sizes.
Your partner’s sleep affects your sleep too. Rattling, insomnia, foul mood, and snoring become a problem for both of you. My husband supported me however and we often discussed his snoring in the evenings and thought about ways to solve the issues as soon as possible.

Stretch marks are very common and harmless and often look like pink, red, brown, black, purple or silver streaks on your skin, which start off darker and then fade over time.
What are the point of stretch mark creams?
Stretch mark creams are designed to be used where the skin stretches, either during weight gain or through pregnancy when the bump gets bigger (as well as other bits of the body) during the nine months.
Do stretch mark creams actually remove stretch marks?

The Tummy Rub Butter was very easy to apply and a little went a long way. You massage all over the areas that will experience some stretching and dry skin over the nine months. The package says to massage up to your boobs and all-around your belly, but I would also recommend you massage on the front of your thighs too as that area stretches a little over the pregnancy months too.

The Tummy Rub Butter has lots of healing properties which are rich in different oils and Omegas and you can definitely see how well it works against the skin. The Mama Mio Tummy Rub Butter is the best tummy butter stretch mark cream I’ve used to date. It’s not too oily like coconut oil (when I rub oil on my body the grease shows up on my clothes. There is a Mama Mio tummy rub oil which is not as greasy) and it’s not too difficult to massage in like some popular brands (i.e. the Bio-Oil which I’ve used previously.)
The Mama cream texture is delicious and smells so nice – I love the cocoa aroma, which makes me want to eat this cream. Therefore, I have given it a few five star Mama Mio reviews. Lots of other mums have given five star Mama Mio stretch mark cream reviews too.

At £24.00 you’re looking at a high-priced product to prevent stretch marks, so I would make it count and start using it in the second trimester when your bump grows and stretches. I would also suggest to Mama Mio to make this cream in a squeeze bottle, as I don’t enjoy dipping my fingers in and out. Other than that, I cannot fault the cream itself. It smells delicious; it feels so wondrous against the skin, and it leaves a lovely moisturised and non-greasy protective layer on my belly that doesn’t seep into the clothes.
I would thoroughly recommend buying this great Tummy Rub Butter for your growing belly and other areas too to prevent stretch marks from forming – because once they appear, it’s very difficult to get rid of them! I think this butter might even be a great home hair care product for my curly hair!

Why growth scans are important in pregnancy
*Motherhood Diaries worked with MyBaby4D in Watford (Ultrasound Image Studio Ltd) to raise awareness among pregnant couples about the importance of ultrasound scans during pregnancy to monitor the health and well-being of your baby. We were provided with the opportunity to review the Growth & Presentation Scan for the article – all opinions are 100% my own*
During your pregnancy, you should have routine scans via the NHS at around 12 weeks (nuchal translucency scan or dating scan) and 20 weeks (mid-pregnancy or anomaly scan). In this MyBaby4D Pregnancy Scan Series, I’ve talked about the importance of early scans (before 12 weeks) and wellbeing scans (from 16 weeks), which can provide that extra bit of comfort that the baby is doing OK, as there is a lot of time in between each NHS scan. Unfortunately, we don’t have a camera inside our uterus.
If necessary, you may be offered a foetal Growth scan between 28 and 40 weeks, too. We will discuss growth scans in more detail in this article.
Why are growth scans necessary?
I wasn’t aware of growth scans until my second baby measured big for dates (my bump was slightly bigger than the estimated week of pregnancy). So, I was scheduled to go for a foetal growth scan at 36 weeks to see if he was measuring slightly on the larger side and if there were any indicators of increased amniotic fluid (more on this below) and gestational diabetes. Otherwise, I would have no idea growth scans existed.
In recent years, hospitals’ focus has been on stillbirth prevention, as stillbirth rates in the UK were among the highest in Western Europe and had not changed much over the last twenty years. Most stillbirths were classed as ‘unexplained’, which meant these deaths were unavoidable. However, independent case reviews have been conducted to find that many stillbirths were associated with substandard antenatal care and, therefore, potentially avoidable. Most stillbirths showed that there was growth restriction during pregnancy, which had not been recognised during antenatal care. This meant that most women never had a growth scan, therefore there was no special attention until there was an absence of foetal movements, which was usually when it was too late.
Therefore, a better classification system came about that included categories for foetal growth restrictions (e.g., small for gestational age, which is a factor that increases stillbirth sevenfold). This report also found that recognising foetal growth restriction during antenatal care can halve the risk of stillbirth if discovered early.
The RCOG guidelines developed an algorithm that set out the recommended assessment of early pregnancy risk factors and the route of care for low-risk and high-risk pregnancies with foetal growth restriction. Those with an increased risk would require a growth scan and assessment. However, this was found by many hospitals to be too complicated, so The Journal of British Medical Ultrasound Society, Ultrasound, helped the NHS develop a simplified algorithm that identified a list of risk factors as part of the Saving Babies’ Lives Care Bundle initiative. The NHS now prescribes routine growth scans until delivery for those considered high-risk between 28 and 40 weeks.

The primary objective of the third-trimester growth scan is to check the well-being of the baby, so I will go through each aspect of the foetal Growth Ultrasound scan taken by Dalson, the sonographer and break down each part below to show what happens at a Growth scan during pregnancy.
Preliminary questions
Dalson asked if I had had a growth scan before, if the NHS mentioned having one at 36 weeks, and whether I could notice a pattern in the baby’s movements. I told her this baby doesn’t really move much; she just shifts from side to side. But during the scan, she was dancing away, and I did wonder whether the ultrasound waves were too loud for her.
“Fetuses can hear ultrasound and the sound is as loud as a subway train entering a station.”
I also find that the baby moves more when I’m on my back. I often wonder whether I’m squashing her in that position and whether that’s why we are advised to lie on our left side while sleeping and napping. Lying on your right side puts pressure on your liver, so the left side is optimal.
During the scan, Dalson checked the following:
The head
We saw a bird’s-eye view of the baby’s head, and Dalson measured the head circumference. Dalson confirmed that the baby’s head was down, but she did state that the baby could still move at this stage. Until 34 weeks, they can still turn, but generally, babies may settle in a head-down position around 32 to 36 weeks. The baby’s head measured within the normal range.
Legs and Feet
We saw the baby’s legs stretched out, and the feet, too. Dalson struggled to measure the thigh bone as the baby’s hands on her bottom caused shadowing. I was asked to move to the side as our girl was kicking and munching away on amniotic fluid.
Amniotic Fluid Index
Dalson measured the single deepest pocket of fluid for the Amniotic Fluid Index, which should be between 2 and 8cm. Too little fluid means oligohydramnios (which is what I saw in my third ultrasound scan during my second-trimester miscarriage when I broke my waters at 15 weeks) or polyhydramnios. I was measuring at 7.7cm at the top of the normal range. Dalson mentioned that at MyBaby4D (and Watford General Hospital, where we plan to give birth), they measure one of the four pockets of the amniotic fluid volume, but some hospitals will measure all pockets. As I was measuring on top of the normal range, I was advised to control the sugar in my diet, as above 8cm could be an indicator of gestational diabetes. I have been so good with sugar until the last trimester, but now I have to get myself off it again. But to hear I was 7.7cm was a good trigger to watch my diet for the next ten weeks.
Waist and tummy
Dalson moved on to measuring our girl’s waist (Abdominal Circumference), and I was asked to turn to the other side as the baby was dancing away. We saw a bird’s-eye view of the tummy.
Spine and kidneys
They check the kidneys to assess for normality and also exclude renal pelvis dilation (RPD)—excess fluid inside the foetal kidneys. The fluid measured within the normal range.
Stomach and bladder
Dalson checked the stomach and bladder to ensure the baby was drinking well and the stomach was below the diaphragm. Pregnant women can still catch late-onset Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, where the baby’s stomach migrates into the chest. Thankfully, the stomach was where it should be, below the diaphragm.
Heart
We saw the beating heart, which was so relieving to see.
Gender check
It was confirmed again that we were having a girl, and this time I saw the three lines!
Placenta
My placenta was on the back wall, which is good. Dalson checked the blood flow in the umbilical cord to assess fetoplacental circulation, as I had mentioned to her my baby’s reduced movements. There was a normal flow pattern, and the pulsatility index (PI) reading was within the normal range, which was relieving. Indicators for performing umbilical artery Doppler may depend on individual hospital protocols. Some hospitals will check blood flow throughout the Growth scans,, and others will only check if indicated.
Weight
Once Dalson performed all three measurements, the baby weighed 1.5kg/3lbs and 5oz at 31 weeks.
We were provided with a report showing the baby’s measurements and developments, as well as the health and state of my placenta and amniotic fluid. The femur length was showing a little under, but thankfully, the estimated foetal weight (EFW) was plotting within the normal range.
EFW = Estimated Foetal Weight, HC = Head Circumference, AC = Abdominal Circumference and FL = Femur Length
Placenta posterior not low means that the placenta is situated high in the uterus and has attached itself to the back of the uterus. The foetal position is Cephalic which means her head is down and feet is up (which is great!). The Amniotic Fluid Index that I mentioned above is showing at 7.7cm which is at the top of the normal range. Umbilical Artery Doppler; positive EDF (speed of the blood through the cord) indicates a normal trace and it was within the normal range.

“They’re not [technically] measuring growth. We don’t measure growth and there is no system by which we can accurately assess the growth – growth is speed, yeah? These are assessment scans or wellbeing scans as we call them.”

I’ll answer all these together. As mentioned above, growth scans are not routine,, but your consultant, doctor or midwife may book a baby Growth scan if you are measuring big or small for dates. The scanning of a baby can show up indicators of too much or too little amniotic fluid and check for other developmental issues, therefore it is important to attend your growth scan if it has been suggested for you to do so. Depending on your issues, you can have a 28 week Growth scan (often when the bump is small) or a 32 week Growth scan (or at 34 and 36 weeks when baby could be measuring too big or too small). I had my initial NHS Growth scan at 36 weeks, so it depends on when your hospital books the appointment.
Growth scans are safe, but as with anything, they are not 100% accurate, as they are based on estimates. Specific issues can be missed at your scan,, so it’s essential to track your baby’s movements and attend all midwife and consultant appointments for optimum antenatal care.
Reasons why you will be offered a growth scan
If your fundal height (vertical measurement of your belly) is smaller or larger than expected for your baby’s gestational age
If you have any maternal diseases like diabetes or gestational diabetes
If your placenta is looking low at the 20-week scan
If you have a history of pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure and swollen hands, face and feet)
If you have a history of premature births
If you are very overweight and you have a BMI of 40 or over
If there is a large difference in your and your partner’s height, although experts dispute this so it may be assessed on a case-by-case basis
You have concerns about your baby’s pattern of movement or reduced movements
You have any vaginal bleeding
You experience any abdominal pain
Are growth scans 3D or 4D?
At MyBaby4D, you can request a 3D or 4D preview, but the NHS does not offer them. Remember, the growth scan is to check the baby’s well-being and development—all other perks are added bonuses but may not be offered if they disrupt the baby’s well-being check during the appointment.
Can partners attend growth scans?

We signed up to another vegetarian family box again – three meals for four people – and the food was delicious and so easy to make! The HelloFresh menu offers kid-friendly meals which are not too spicy, so everyone got to enjoy the family recipes.
My middle one and I enjoyed watching season 13 of Masterchef and he has become my food critic. He was very gracious in his critiquing though and gave my HelloFresh cooking rave reviews – I felt like I was on Masterchef with Marcus Wareing!

Kid-friendly dinners
You get to cook very easy kid-friendly recipes for dinner from the HelloFresh family box menu which all the kids really enjoyed, even my 15-month-old! Some of the flavours might be a bit too overpowering, however, when I washed down my baby’s dinner with some plain rice or milk, my youngest ate everything up – and she’s fussy!
My eldest has developed a love for spice and I believed this newfound love came from our previous HelloFresh box as I hardly ever add spice to my food. My middle one enjoyed the very mild version of the meals (so I left the spice out on some of them) and he is very keen on different types of veg, so overall it did work with for the kids.
But there’s no way we can go for anything that’s stronger than the mild versions – not yet!
The family meal recipes include lots of vegetables, even new ones that I don’t normally buy. The great thing about HelloFresh is that it has encouraged me and the kids to try new ingredients which can now become part of our staple grocery shop.
You can pause your subscription at anytime
If you’re away one week, or you can’t afford it a certain week, you can pause your HelloFresh boxes at any time, provided you’ve given enough notice and they haven’t packed and sent the box yet. This helps you to reduce your weekly/monthly spend or, should you choose to, do something different and take the kids out food shopping for a change.
There are tons of meal variety
The HelloFresh family menu is very varied, so you get the chance to enjoy cuisines from all around the world. From Indian to Thai to classic British, you can select your plan and your recipes and you’re good to go. I love that the kids get to enjoy different types of food from around the world – it increases their palette and it educates them on how ingredients can vary in the way they go together in different parts of the world.
Kids can get involved too!
You receive easy dinner ideas for kids to get involved in helping with the meal prep too. Nothing is too difficult and you don’t need fancy utensils either. Get the kids washing the rice and cooking them, or if they’re old enough or able enough, allow them to chop and prepare the veg. Show them how the different ingredients go from raw to plate because it’s so educational for them and it helps fussy eaters know where their food comes from, which builds trust for them.
Easy to follow recipe cards
The recipe cards are so simple to follow. Every ingredient has a picture, so you can educate the kids on what they look like and the quantities are clearly set out so you don’t put too much or too little of the ingredient in the recipe. As a result, you get a Masterchef-style recipe to enjoy with the family every time!
Recyclable and packagable
HelloFresh are big on recycling and using as little packaging as possible, so you won’t see plastic or materials which are not biodegradable. I love helping those companies who think about how to make our environment a better place!
No wastage!
There is no food wastage because you’re given the right amount of ingredients for each meal, which is great because I tend to overbuy my ingredients and end up with food that’s no longer edible – it’s such a waste! At least this way I don’t have to spend time working out portion sizes, I can just use HelloFresh to do all the calculating for me.

What are the HelloFresh family-friendly meals?
You get a whole bank of different cuisines from around the world, which double up as kid-friendly easy dinners if you don’t opt for the overly spicy. The recipe cards will tell you how much spice is in each meal, so head to the website and just select the recipes which are suitable for your family’s palette.
There is a huge variety to choose from – if you’re a family that likes meat, then opt for the classic box. If you’re a large family then the Family Box is great. If you’re veggie/vegan then the vegetarian boxes are the best for you.
Why do people like meal prep delivery services like HelloFresh?
Meal prepping especially for a large family can take a long time – time which we parents don’t have, especially if we’re homeschooling (it took me five hours to homeschool the kids each day last week!).
So after a day of work and homeschooling (as well as managing the house and kids), I don’t want to have to sit down and work out what to buy so I ensure my kids eat fresh and healthy every day. It’s why so many parents turn to frozen food and ready meals because we’re tired and cooking an elaborate Masterchef meal after a long day can be overwhelming and frustrating.
HelloFresh is so convenient because it takes the guesswork out of what ingredients to get, while still ensuring we’re getting our fresh fruit and veg in every day and hitting all the food groups to help the kids – and adults – grow strong.
Food is a bunch of ingredients either in their raw form or put together to rustle up something to eat. A meal is a carefully prepared concoction of ingredients created via a recipe, with sometimes with different herbs and spices added and a side dish. A meal takes time to prepare for and get right.
Is meal prepping healthy?
Meal prepping is definitely healthy if you get it right. It’s important to get your fresh 5 to 7-a-day of fresh fruit and veg and I try to hit all the food groups in one dish, like calcium and iron etc. Meal prepping can take a long time but it’s worth it if you have the time and resources to do it. HelloFresh have done the meal prepping for you by packaging up the fresh ingredients for you to make that healthy meal. If you’re like me with a million tasks already, leave the meal prepping to the experts!
Is HelloFresh a scam?
When scouring online for HelloFresh reviews before I decided to give them a shot, I found the vast majority of the reviews to be very positive. We have also used HelloFresh twice and can categorically tell you that HelloFresh is indeed NOT a scam. If you can afford it, it takes so much of the pain away from meal planning and shopping for groceries and the food has been unanimously delicious. No bad meal as yet!
Are HelloFresh meal kits worth the money?
One can argue that it’s not as cheap as the groceries you buy at the store – and that’s true. However, the quality of ingredients and food is better than what you get at the grocery store and a restaurant (unless you go Michelin-starred), so there are added benefits, which means you can’t really expect to have your cake and eat it (no pun intended there).
So, are HelloFresh meals convenient?
HelloFresh family meals are delicious, they’re easy-to-cook and, most importantly the kids love it! What’s great is that HelloFresh has got my middle one interested in preparing and cooking in the kitchen too because it’s so easy to follow the recipes cards. So HelloFresh is educational as well.
For a mum of three who works at home and now homeschools for five hours a day, it’s a no-brainer for me. Online food deliveries are now scarce due to the pandemic and I haven’t got time to work out what to cook every day in the week. So HelloFresh is worth the money and the convenience because I can cross off the meal prepping and the grocery-buying and just concentrate on ensuring the dinner comes out properly – and with those easy-to-follow recipe cards, I haven’t made a bad meal yet!

The Yamaha Arius YDP-S34 is a digital piano, which means that you don’t have to tune it – ever! You just plug it in and away you go.
Just like a real acoustic grand piano, you get 88 keys with the Yamaha Arius YDP-S34 digital piano, and it feels like a real piano to play as well. The graded hammer keys are weighted which means there is a resistance when you play, just like the traditional piano. And the keys are also touch sensitive which means you can create a subtle change in tone and sound by merely lifting your fingers from the keys. The Yamaha Arius YDP-S34 digital piano also has Intelligent Acoustic Control which means the digital piano adjusts the sound automatically to enjoy balanced piano tones at any volume level.
The compact design of the piano is slim and modern. It’s built to be tucked away into a corner if you don’t have space for a grand piano. The sound is deep and rich, just like the sound of a real acoustic grand piano, and this is down to the CFX Grand Piano Voice sound, i.e. this digital piano features the sound of the Yamaha’s flagship concert grand piano.
There are three piano sounds built in and on the left-hand side of the digital piano you have buttons that allow you to scroll through the different sounds including a more mellow piano sound, or a brighter piano sound. There are other sounds available, which means you can pick the sound according to what you’re playing, which is amazing. You even get 50 classical music masterpieces built into the digital piano as well!
You also have recording capabilities so that you can, for example, record one hand and play along with the other to practice learning a piece step by step. This is a very handy tool when you’re at the beginning of your piano journey.
The Yamaha Arius YDP-S34 comes in three colours. We have a black digital piano, but you can also choose white or white ash.
Other perks

Summary
This breathtaking digital piano from Yamaha is very elegant and powerful, with beautiful sounds emanating from the speakers that are akin to a real grand piano. I love the weighted, touch-sensitive keys that allow you to immerse yourself into the music when you play, and the recording function is a great way to practice as you can playback and hear how you’re getting on with the piece that you’re practising. The metronome function is excellent for kids too when you’re trying to teach them music theory. And, it’s a great piano to have if you are low on space too – the digital piano is so slimline that you can tuck it away into the corner of the room and it won’t take up much space.
Personally, I love this piano, and I would recommend any beginner, intermediate or advanced piano player to give this digital piano a shot. It’s the best out there for that acoustic grand piano feel with the least amount of footprint!
