Natural skin-safe solutions for kids: NatPat Review
This post is sponsored by NatPat * who have gifted us some products to review during our trip to North Cyprus. All thoughts and opinions are 100% our own.
Quick verdict
Buy this: MagicPatch Itch Relief – genuinely works, stays on and stopped my kids and I scratching immediately. Now a permanent part of our first aid kit.
Accidentally tested and impressed: ZenPatch Mood Calming Patches – our youngest was patched with these by mistake at a funfair/festival and was noticeably calmer than everyone else all evening. Now intentionally part of our toolkit for big emotions and bedtime battles.
Mixed results: Mosquito Patches for Kids – it didn’t prevent bites for us in the Mediterranean, but might work better in less intense mosquito environments or add more to your clothes.
Couldn’t test: SunnyPatch UV Stickers – went clear immediately on the skin so couldn’t use as intended.
Whether you’re jetting off for some winter sun, planning ahead for the summer holidays, or simply want natural solutions in your family first aid kit (like mosquito repellent that doesn’t contain DEET, or chemicals you can’t pronounce or spell), then look no further as NatPat* reached out to Motherhood Diaries about their range of natural, patch-based products for children and we were more than eager to try them.
As a mum of four, with kids ranging from 4 to 15, I had a ready-made testing squad ready to enjoy a sun, sea and sand holiday in July/August. So when we headed to Cyprus on our family holiday (it was super hot!), I packed a selection of their patches and was determined to put them through their paces in real-world conditions.
Here’s my completely honest verdict on each product, i.e. what worked brilliantly, what disappointed, and what I’d recommend to fellow parents no matter the season.
What is NatPat?
NatPat creates sticker and patch-based products designed to help families tackle everyday challenges naturally. Their range includes mosquito repellent patches, UV-detecting stickers, itch relief patches, and allergy relief stickers, as well as magic mood-calming patches, all made with natural ingredients and free from harsh chemicals like DEET.
The great thing about these patches is there are no messy sprays, no direct skin contact (great for children with sensitive skin), and all include fun designs that kids actually want to wear – and kids really do love stickers!
But do they actually work? Let’s get into it.
When will you actually use these products?
One thing I love about NatPat products is they’re not just for summer. Here’s when each product comes in handy:
MagicPatch (Itch Relief): This is a year-round essential. Bug bites from autumn spiders, midges in Scotland, mystery bites that appear overnight; these happen in every season. And you do feel instant relief. This is one product we’d never travel without now.
BuzzPatch (Mosquito Repellent): February half-term in the Canaries, Easter in the Med, summer holidays anywhere warm, autumn half-term in Dubai. If you’re escaping the UK grey for somewhere sunny, mosquitoes will likely be there to greet you.
SunnyPatch (UV Detection): Any sunny destination plus UK summers. Sun damage happens on ski trips too — the UV reflection off snow is brutal. Useful from March onwards when UV levels start rising.
AllergyPatch (Allergy Relief): Tree pollen starts as early as late February, grass pollen peaks in summer, and indoor allergens (dust mites, pet dander) are year-round. If your little one suffers from seasonal sniffles or year-round sensitivities, these could be worth having on hand.
ZenPatch (Mood Calming): School mornings when emotions are running high, long car journeys, visits to the grandparents, homework battles, bedtime wind-down, or any situation where you need to take the edge off big feelings. We accidentally discovered how well these work (more on that below!).
So what did we think?
MagicPatch Itch Relief
Verdict: 5/5 – Genuinely impressed — the clear winner
Of all the products we tested, MagicPatch itch relief stickers were the standout success. These little patches work by using a grid pattern that gently lifts the skin to help reduce itching from bug bites — and honestly, they delivered.
The key takeaway: When my younger two inevitably got bitten on our trip, these patches provided noticeable relief almost immediately. My four-year-old, who would normally scratch a bite until it bled, stopped fussing within minutes of application. The patches stayed on and lasted for days on the top – exactly as promised.
If you’re looking for the best itch relief for children that’s mess-free and chemical-free, MagicPatch genuinely delivers. These are now a permanent addition to our travel first aid kit and I keep a pack at home too for random bites that pop up throughout the year.
Verdict: 3/5 – Didn’t work for our family in Mediterranean conditions
I really wanted to love these. The BuzzPatch stickers use citronella and other essential oils to create a scent barrier that’s supposed to deter mosquitoes for up to 12 hours. They have a pleasant, natural citrus scent that my kids didn’t mind at all and the application couldn’t be easier: just stick them on clothing or nearby surfaces.
The honest truth: They didn’t prevent bites for us. We were in Cyprus during peak mosquito season, and despite applying multiple patches per child (we tried different placements and quantities), everyone still got bitten. All of us, adults and kids alike, came back with multiple bites.
Now, to be fair, mosquito repellent effectiveness can vary hugely depending on location, species of mosquito, and individual body chemistry. Mediterranean mosquitoes are notoriously aggressive, and what works in milder environments might not cut it against the Cyprus varieties. Other families may have better results, particularly in the UK or destinations with less intense mosquito populations.
Bottom line: If you’re looking for the best mosquito repellent for children and prefer a natural, DEET-free option, these might still be worth trying, especially for UK garden evenings, camping trips, or destinations without aggressive mosquito species. But for tropical holidays, the Canaries in winter, or areas known for biting insects, you might want a backup plan.
Verdict: 2/5 – Great concept, couldn’t test properly
The SunnyPatch concept is genuinely clever: UV-detecting stickers that change colour when it’s time to reapply suncream. As someone who’s forever paranoid about UV protection for children, whether we’re on a beach holiday or a ski trip, I was excited about these.
What happened: We couldn’t get them to work as intended. When we applied them to skin, they went clear almost immediately before we’d even gone outside. This made it impossible to use them as a UV indicator since we couldn’t tell when they were changing versus their baseline state.
I suspect there may be specific application requirements I missed, perhaps compatibility issues with certain suncream types, required drying times, or placement considerations. The concept of UV protection indicators for children is fantastic, and I’d love to try these again with clearer usage guidance.
Verdict: Not yet tested — update coming for hay fever season
We also received AllergyPatch stickers, which are designed to provide natural relief from allergy symptoms using essential oils like eucalyptus and peppermint. While we didn’t have a chance to test these during our trip (thankfully no allergy flare-ups!), the concept of having a natural, child-friendly option for seasonal allergy relief is appealing.
For parents seeking the best allergy relief for children without drowsy antihistamines, these could be worth exploring. With tree pollen season starting as early as late February and grass pollen peaking through summer, I’ll be testing these properly and updating this post with my findings.
Verdict: 4/5 – Accidentally tested — and genuinely impressed
Here’s a funny story: one evening at a festival, we were frantically patching everyone up with mosquito repellent before heading out. In the chaos, our youngest ended up covered in the wrong patches, the ZenPatch mood-calming stickers instead of BuzzPatches. We only realised later when we noticed she was by far the calmest person on that entire trip. No meltdowns, no overstimulation, just zen.
The ZenPatch uses a blend of essential oils including Mandarin, Sweet Orange, Atlas Cedarwood, and Lavender, all designed to help calm the nervous system and regulate emotions. According to NatPat, they work by triggering receptors in the nose that send messages to the limbic system (the part of the brain that controls behaviour and emotions), and the effects can last up to 8 hours.
The key takeaway: While our “testing” was completely accidental, the results were noticeable enough that we’ve since used them intentionally. They’re now part of our toolkit for long journeys, overwhelming situations, and those evenings when bedtime feels like a battleground.
Who these are perfect for: If you have a child who struggles with big emotions, gets overwhelmed easily, or just needs help winding down, these could be worth trying. They’re also marketed for children with anxiety, ADHD traits, or autism, though obviously, every child is different and these aren’t a replacement for professional support.
Bottom line: I wouldn’t have believed a sticker could make a noticeable difference to mood, but our accidental experiment suggests otherwise. The fact that they’re 100% natural essential oils (no synthetic ingredients or drowsy side effects) makes them worth having on hand for those moments when everyone, including you, needs to take a breath.
The MagicPatch itch relief stickers are genuinely excellent and something I’ll repurchase again and again. They work, they’re convenient, and they’re gentle enough for even my sensitive-skinned toddler. Whether you’re heading abroad this February half-term, planning your summer holiday, or just want something effective in your medicine cabinet, if you buy nothing else from the range, get these.
The other products didn’t work as well for us in the conditions we tested them in, but that doesn’t mean they won’t work for your family. Natural products can be highly individual, and what failed against aggressive Mediterranean mosquitoes might work perfectly well in the UK or at less tropical destinations.
What I genuinely appreciate about NatPat is their commitment to natural, chemical-free solutions that are safe for children’s sensitive skin. In a market full of harsh synthetic options, having natural alternatives is valuable, even if they require some trial and error to find what works best for your family.
Have you tried NatPat products? I’d love to hear about your experience in the comments below, especially if you’ve had different results with the BuzzPatch or SunnyPatch. Every family is different, and your insights could help other parents make informed decisions!

How to achieve happiness in your family home
According to the EPA, parents spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, much of it at home with their families.
Your home should make you smile, not stress you out. Designing for joy isn’t about following trends or copying glossy magazine spreads; it’s about creating a space that lifts your mood, makes life easier, and feels like you.
From the moment your feet touch the floor in the morning (often earlier than you’d like, thanks to little ones) to the soft glow of a lamp in the evening, every detail has the power to shape how you feel. And the secret is to design with happiness in mind, not just to make the place look pleasing.
What it really means to design for joy
Designing for joy is about emotion, not perfection. It’s that little sigh of relief when you walk through the door after a long day. It’s the cosy warmth of the living room on a rainy Sunday or the light that dances across the kitchen tiles while making breakfast.
When we design with joy in mind, we stop chasing flawless interiors and start building homes that make us feel good. It’s about surrounding yourself with colours that make you smile, materials that feel right in your hands, and spaces that work for real life —i.e., kids, pets, muddy boots, and all.
Creating zones that work for homework, play, and relaxation
Choosing furniture that can handle real family life
A joyful home tells your story. It’s filled with familiar textures, comforting scents, and small details that quietly say, “this is our home”. Research from the Journal of Environmental Psychology confirms that personalised spaces significantly reduce family stress levels.
Why happiness deserves a place in every design plan
We often talk about function and style in interiors, but happiness rarely gets a mention, which is a real shame because our surroundings can have a bigger impact on our mood than we realise.
Bright spaces tend to lift energy levels, while softer, natural tones help calm a busy mind. A clutter-free room can make mornings run more smoothly, and a cosy corner can become your daily reset spot, even if it’s just five minutes with a cuppa before the chaos begins.
The science behind happy homes:
Natural light exposure increases serotonin production by 30%
Organised spaces reduce morning stress for 73% of families
Good design can’t fix everything, but it can make daily life more enjoyable. It’s the kind of quiet happiness that builds up over time, like stepping onto warm wooden flooring on a chilly morning or catching the smell of baked goods in the kitchen.
The role of flooring in a joyful home
Flooring might not be the first thing you think about when it comes to happiness, but it has a surprisingly big influence on how a home feels. It sets the foundation for everything else… literally.
Think about it: flooring is the first thing you feel when you wake up and the last thing you touch before bed. Whether you’re padding barefoot through the kitchen or hosting friends in the living room, it’s always part of the moment.
Key benefits for family homes:
Warmth and comfort: A soft, warm surface underfoot makes every step feel better. Engineered wood and luxury vinyl are both great for maintaining a homely feel without the maintenance. Perfect for those midnight baby checks or early morning school runs.
A sense of calm: Natural wood grains and gentle tones bring a grounding energy into a space. They help rooms feel balanced and peaceful, even when life feels anything but.
Light and brightness: Pale flooring reflects light beautifully, making smaller spaces feel airy and open. If you prefer a snug, cocoon-like feel, darker floors create warmth and depth instead.
Ease of living: True joy comes when things just work. Durable, easy-to-clean flooring means fewer worries about muddy paws or spilt tea, and more time spent actually enjoying your home. For families, consider waterproof laminate or luxury vinyl planks that can handle spills, toys, and heavy traffic.
Flooring quietly supports the whole mood of your home. It can add texture, warmth, and personality in ways that go far beyond what’s underfoot.
Simple ways to design for joy
You don’t need to start from scratch to make your home more joyful. A few thoughtful changes can make a big difference.
Quick wins for busy families:
Play with light: Use mirrors and warm lighting to create brightness and a sense of space. Try battery-operated LED strips for instant under-cabinet lighting, no electrician needed!
Add nature: Plants, wood textures, and natural materials help soften a room’s look and boost wellbeing. Choose low-maintenance options like snake plants or pothos that survive busy family life.
Bring in personal touches: Family photos, handmade crafts, or travel keepsakes make your space truly yours. Create a rotating gallery wall for children’s artwork – it’s a confidence booster for kids and adds personality to your home.
Choose comfort first: From your flooring to your seating, prioritise pieces that feel good to use every day. Invest in washable slipcovers and memory foam rug pads for family-friendly comfort.
Keep it calm: Joy often grows in simple, uncluttered spaces. Clear surfaces and clever storage can instantly lift the mood. Implement a nightly 15-minute family reset where everyone tidies their zone.
At the end of the day, the best homes are the ones that make you smile when you walk through the door. Designing for joy means thinking about the everyday moments that make life feel good; whether that’s the feel of your kitchen floor as you make your morning brew or the glow of sunlight bouncing across your living room.
Remember: Perfect homes don’t exist, but happy homes do. Start with one small change – perhaps better lighting in your most-used room or a cosy reading corner for bedtime stories. Small steps lead to big transformations in how your family experiences home.
FAQs about creating a happy family home
Q: How can I maintain a joyful home with young children? A: Focus on durable materials, smart storage, and designated play zones. Remember that “lived-in” is beautiful when it reflects a happy family life.
Q: How do I handle different family members‘ style preferences? A: Keep shared spaces neutral while allowing personal expression in bedrooms. Let children have input in their own spaces while maintaining overall home cohesion.
Q: Can I achieve this on a budget? A: Absolutely! Paint, reorganisation, and thrift store finds can work wonders. Focus on one area at a time rather than overwhelming yourself (and your budget).
Q: How do I know if my design choices are working? A: Watch your family’s behaviour. Do they gravitate to certain spaces? Do mornings feel calmer? Are bedtimes smoother? Your family’s happiness is the best measure of success.

Start-Rite school shoes review – real-life wear test
#AD – Paid partnership with Start-Rite. Products gifted. Opinions are my own.
With four kids in school, our shoe-shopping trips come around roughly every two to four months because children’s feet seem to grow faster than it rains in a single British season. And if they’re not sizing up, it’s usually because the shoes didn’t survive the brutal quality control of one average school day: torrential rain, muddy puddles, uneven playground gravel, and at least one child who refuses to lift their feet when they walk.
So yes, school shoes have to work hard. They need to be high-quality, durable, and built to outlast both the weather and the wearer.
When Start-Rite offered to partner with Motherhood Diaries and gift four pairs of their beautifully made school shoes, we jumped at the chance. Fast forward to October half-term, and I’m happy to report that not only are all four pairs still very much in one piece, but the kids are actually excited to wear them. (A small miracle in itself.)
And because good news deserves to be shared, we’re taking you along for the ride. In this article, we’ll walk you through the full Start-Rite unboxing, chat about why these shoes stand out, and explore why getting the right fit matters so much for growing feet.
Why we chose Start-Rite (and why fit matters for children’s feet)
When you stop and do the math, children spend over 1,200 hours a year in their school shoes running, climbing, kicking footballs, and racing to class. So, finding the right pair isn’t just about ticking off a uniform list. The right fit is absolutely essential for healthy growth, posture, and comfort all day long.
That’s where Start-Rite* comes in. Their collection is one of the most extensive in the UK, designed to suit every child’s foot shape, whether wide, narrow, or somewhere in between. Each pair is built with the understanding that kids’ feet aren’t just smaller versions of adult feet; they’re developing structures of bones, muscles, and ligaments that need protection as they strengthen and grow through the school years.
During the school years, all ligaments begin to form and bones become stronger. Trunk, leg, and foot muscles are learning to work synchronously, although they are not fully developed until mid-to-late teens.
As children wear school shoes for 195 days a year for at least six hours a day, it is super important that the shoes fit properly. Poorly fitting footwear can cause immediate discomfort and can also affect the way children move and walk for the rest of their lives. If uncomfortable shoes disrupt a child’s walking pattern, the brain will compensate, potentially leading to long-term issues such as knee and spine problems. Given that a child’s gait (the pattern of how they walk) continues to develop until around the age of 16, shoes must be worn correctly and be comfortable to support healthy development.
Start-Rite’s quality control for shoes is based on a number of factors that go into making the perfect shoe for a growing child and we will go through each of these briefly.
Comfort that keeps up with busy feet
Start-Rite designs its shoes to feel good all day long with soft cushioning where it counts and breathable leather linings that help prevent overheating. Even the insoles are engineered for comfort. Some insoles can be removed and some are extra padded, so little feet stay supported whether they’re sitting in class or sprinting across the playground.
The fit – no two feet are the same
Each Start-Rite shoe is available in whole and half sizes and multiple widths, giving every child a near-custom fit – perfect for parents who’ve ever had to choose between a shoe that’s a bit snug and one that’s slightly roomy. You’ll also find different fastening options like rip-tape, buckles, and laces, to suit different ages and levels of independence. Every design aims to make mornings smoother for parents and help kids feel confident doing things on their own.
Start-Rite recommends measuring your child’s feet every 3–4 months, since children’s growth spurts can creep up faster than we expect. Their Start-Rite measuring gauge makes it simple to check at home before buying the next pair.
Durability and everyday protection
Kids don’t hold back and neither should their shoes. Start-Rite’s supple leather uppers (and smart patent finishes) are dyed through to keep them looking newer for longer. Scuffs and scratches are easy to hide with a quick polish, and reinforced toes and heels add an extra layer of durability. Some styles even include reflective panels with enhanced 360-degree protection around the tow, heel and side of some shoes, for better visibility on darker winter mornings.
Flexibility that follows natural movement
A big part of what sets Start-Rite apart is its biomechanically engineered sole. Designed to flex exactly where the foot naturally bends around the metatarsal joints, it allows kids’ feet to move freely and safely through every hop, skip, and sprint. This flexibility helps the foot muscles develop strength and coordination, supporting healthy movement patterns that will last long after the school day ends.
Start-Rite shoes are built for real life and the non-stop motion of childhood. They’re shoes that don’t just fit; they understand what growing feet need.
Unboxing video — a first look at four pairs
We got the chance to review four pairs of Start-Rite shoes for a wide spectrum of ages; our 4 and 6-year-old girls and our 13 and 14-year-old boys. All kids were extremely happy with the shoes and despite some camera shyness with the teenagers, we managed to catch the girls in action with their new shoes! You can check out our unboxing video on YouTube and Instagram:
Between four kids, we’ve somehow managed to cover every possible foot shape known to humankind – narrow, wide, flat, you name it. So when Start-Rite offered to send us four pairs to put through their paces, it felt like the ultimate real-life test.
We went for a full family line-up: two pairs for the girls and two for the boys. The girls wanted something that looked “pretty but not babyish,” while the boys just needed shoes that could survive them and football. Fair.
From shiny patent T-bars to sturdy lace-ups built for muddy football breaks and endless playground laps, each pair brings something a little different. Whether it’s your child’s first school shoe or their last before secondary, this line-up covers all bases – comfort, durability, and that all-important “Mum, they actually fit!” moment.
The line-up we tested
Here’s what we tested, what each Start-Rite shoe is best for, and how they shaped up straight out of the box:
Star Jump (Girls T-bar Rip-Tape)
If there was ever a first school shoe made to handle every emotion of the Reception years, it’s the Star Jump. Smart in the classroom and protective on the playground, this girls T-bar design genuinely covers all grounds.
The perfectly placed ankle cushioning keeps little feet comfy all day long, while the biomechanically engineered sole flexes exactly where it should, supporting natural, healthy movement. And because four-year-olds rarely stay still, Start-Rite’s clever Air-Rite technology lets air flow through to keep sweaty feet at bay (thank you, science).
The easy rip-tape fastening and removable footbed make it simple for kids to adjust the fit themselves, building confidence and independence from day one. Add in subtle patent details, star accents, and a sparkly insole, and you’ve got a school shoe that feels every bit as magical as it looks.
Sizes: Small 9 – Large 2 Best for: Reception to early primary – active girls who want to do it all.
How they fit
These were an instant hit. My youngest was able to pop them on all by herself (and hasn’t stopped reminding me of that since). The rip-tape fastening allowed her to adjust them for her own comfort, and the ankle padding hugged without rubbing.
Fit-wise, the size 9F felt spot-on — no heel slip, plenty of wiggle room for the toes (a good toe count of about a thumb’s width), and zero “Muuum, my foot hurts!” within the first hour. The wide option would suit chunkier feet, but the standard fit already offered generous space.
Verdict: a perfect first school shoe — soft, flexible, and built to support independent little girls finding their stride.
Hope (black patent girls rip-tape T-bar school shoes)
If your little one needs a stylish new pair of school shoes, the Hope* design is the perfect choice! With a sleek patent finish and fresh star punch detailing, these shoes offer all-day comfort with cushioned ankles, breathable leather and textile linings, and a removable footbed. The specially designed rubber sole provides superior flexibility and support. The T-bar rip-tape fastening ensures a quick, adjustable fit, keeping the shoes secure and making mornings easy and hassle-free.
Features:
Dyed- through leather for scuff-resistant colour
Padded ankles for added comfort and support
Leather linings to absorb moisture and help keep little feet dry and comfy
Riptape fastening for easy adjustment by little fingers
Sizes: Small 9 – Large 2 Best for: Kids who want all-day comfort with a touch of polish and shine.
How did they fit?
Our 6-year-old tester has slightly wide feet, so I was curious to see how Hope handled that. We went with a size 12F, and it fitted beautifully right out of the box. The adjustable rip-tape strap gave a snug, secure fit without pinching.
The patent finish earned top marks for hiding playground scuffs (and doubling as a mirror, apparently). Comfort-wise, the padded collar made a noticeable difference — no red marks, no complaints, just happy feet that looked effortlessly smart all day.
Verdict: a confident, comfortable fit for kids who love that polished “grown-up” look.
Rhino Sherman (Boys Lace-Up)
The Rhino Sherman is the definition of tough love — made for boys who treat their school shoes like sports equipment. Built with a scuff-resistant toe and reinforced heel protection, these lace-ups are designed to look smart for longer (even after football at lunch).
The lightweight, flexible sole supports natural movement and healthy development, while a padded ankle gives comfort and support where it counts. Breathable linings and removable insoles help keep growing feet fresh — and for older kids who’ve mastered tying their own laces, it’s a little badge of independence.
Sizes: 1 – 9 Large Best for: Older boys who need durability, support, and a shoe that’ll actually survive the term.
How did they fit?
My 13-year-old is in that tricky in-between phase where his shoe size seems to change weekly. We went with a Large 5.5 wide, and it was bang-on. He said they felt “solid but light,” which, coming from a teenage boy, is basically poetry.
The heel fit was excellent — no lift, even when walking briskly. Inside, the removable insole made it easy to check the growing room (about one finger’s width at the toes — ideal for longevity). The lace-up design gave a snug, supported feel without being restrictive, and the scuff-resistant toe passed its first test during a very unnecessary post-school kickabout.
Verdict: sturdy, breathable, and surprisingly stylish for a “school shoe” — a winner for active older kids.
Glitch (Boys Lace-Up)
For style-conscious kids who also need comfort, the Glitch hits the sweet spot between “cool” and “practical.” Designed for confidence in the classroom and freedom on the playground, these black leather lace-ups are part of Start-Rite’s RHINO range, meaning they’re built to last.
They come with padded collars for long-lasting comfort and a flexible sole that moves naturally with every step. Inside, leather linings help absorb moisture and the removable footbed gives a personalised fit (ideal when you’re between sizes). It’s the kind of shoe that works hard quietly — no fuss, just comfort and durability all day long.
Sizes: 2 – 12 Large Best for: Senior school boys who want classic style without compromising on comfort.
How did they fit?
Our eldest (14) has officially reached “man feet” territory, so we tested the size 11 standard fit. Straight out of the box, he commented on how light they felt — not what you expect from a traditional lace-up. The padded collar added comfort around the ankle, and the flexible sole meant no awkward breaking-in period (a rarity in school shoes).
Even after a full day, his verdict was simple: “They don’t rub.” Which, if you know teenage boys, is possibly the highest praise they’re capable of giving.
Verdict: sleek, durable, and flexible enough to handle long walks and long days — proof that Start-Rite can do “smart” without sacrificing comfort.
So, which pair came out on top?
Honestly? They all earned their gold stars, just for different reasons. The Star Jump stole hearts straight out of the box (mainly because of its sparkly insole and easy rip-tape strap), while the Hope felt like the “grown-up” choice — polished, practical, and built for comfort that lasts past lunchtime.
On the boys’ side, the Rhino Sherman was basically indestructible. If school shoes had a superhero version, this would be it. And the Glitch felt effortlessly cool. The teenagers actually said, “Yeah, these are fine,” which roughly translates to ‘glowing review’.
In short, all four pairs passed the test with flying colours. No blisters, no complaints, no emergency shoe swaps in the playground. Each shoe fits its child’s size and shape like it was made for them — and if we can get through a full school day with zero grumbles, that’s a big parenting win in my book.
How to choose the right size
If there’s one lesson every parent learns the hard way, it’s that kids’ feet do not follow the normal laws of growth. One minute, they’re a perfect size 12; the next, they’ve somehow jumped to a 1.5 overnight. So how do you keep up without living in the shoe shop?
Start-Rite makes it surprisingly easy. Their Measuring Gauge* lets you check your child’s shoe size at home, whether you prefer the digital SizeWise app or the classic plastic gauge. You simply measure length and width, then use the chart on their website to find your perfect match.
Here are a few quick tips I swear by:
Always measure both feet.
Most kids have one slightly larger foot (usually the right). Always fit the shoe to the bigger foot.
Check the wiggle room.
There should be about a thumb’s width of space between the longest toe and the end of the shoe. That’s the sweet spot for comfort and growth.
Don’t assume “wide” means loose.
Start-Rite’s wide fits are designed for natural toe width, not floppy sides. If your child’s foot looks squeezed or the strap barely closes, it’s worth going up a width, not necessarily a size.
Recheck every few months.
Children’s feet can grow up to two sizes a year (especially after summer), so a quick measure every 3–4 months helps avoid mid-term meltdowns.
When in doubt, size up — slightly.
It’s better to have a little growing room than to cram tiny toes. Start-Rite’s half sizes make it easy to find that in-between fit without the clown-shoe look.
Pro Tip: Always do a mini walk test once your child’s shoes arrive. Watch how the heel sits, how the toes move, and whether they look comfortable. The best shoe is the one they forget they’re wearing — that’s when you know you’ve nailed the fit.
After a full term’s worth of testing (and one or two inevitable “Mum, I stepped in something” incidents), I can confidently say that Start-Rite has more than earned its reputation for quality kids’ shoes.
From the first unboxing to the school-gate dash, every pair passed the ultimate ‘real life’ test. The patent finishes stayed shiny, the leather softened beautifully, and not one child complained about rubbing, slipping, or “weird bits” inside their shoes, which, in this house, is practically a five-star review.
The attention to fit, comfort, and durability really does show. Whether your child needs their first pair of T-bars or a smart lace-up for senior school, Start-Rite has thought about every detail, right down to those scuff-proof toes and flexible soles that let them move the way children are meant to.
In the meantime, if you’re on the search for school shoes that genuinely last (and look good doing it), Start-Rite might just be the brand your kids’ feet have been waiting for.
FAQ — Real parent questions answered
Are Start-Rite shoes barefoot? Not quite. Start-Rite shoes aren’t sold as a barefoot concept — they’re designed with biomechanically engineered soles specific to the age and stage of the child, and they flex with natural movement. They still offer cushioning and structure that is vital for supporting developing feet. Think of them as the perfect solution between sturdy and free-moving.
Are Start-Rite shoes good? Yes! Start-Rite is one of the UK’s most trusted children’s footwear brands, known for fit, comfort, and durability. Their shoes are tested for flexibility, breathability, and everyday performance, and they’re designed specifically for growing children, not just smaller versions of adult shoes.
Are Start-Rite shoes bigger than other brands? Different brands can size differently, so it’s important to get your feet measured specifically for the brand you are buying from. With Start-Rite you can double-check sizing using the brand’s measuring gauge before buying.
Are Start-Rite shoes true to size? Yes, most styles fit true to size when measured correctly. Start-Rite even provides a Measuring Gauge* and SizeWise app so parents can get accurate readings at home.
Are Start-Rite shoes narrow? No, and that’s one of their biggest strengths. They offer narrow, medium, wide, and extra-wide fittings, ensuring a perfect match for almost every child’s foot.

Can crystal healing support overwhelmed parents?
Parenting young children isn’t just about managing schedules and sleepless nights; it’s also about healing from birth, building tools to calm the anxiety that comes with parenting, and reconnecting with yourself amid the beautiful chaos. While paediatricians, lactation consultants, and parent support groups are essential resources, exploring holistic tools like crystal healing has become an increasingly popular practice among millennial parents.
While science hasn’t fully validated the energetic claims made by crystal enthusiasts, many parents say that working with crystals gives them a sense of comfort, grounding, and emotional balance during overwhelming moments. But what exactly is crystal healing and can it really support parents navigating the intense early years?
In this article, we’ll explore how crystal healing works, what the science says, and how parents are using crystals as a complementary form of self-care during pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond.
What is crystal healing?
Crystal healing is an alternative therapy that uses the energetic vibrations of crystals and gemstones to support emotional, physical, and spiritual wellness. Each type of crystal is believed to carry a specific frequency or energy that can interact with the body’s energy field, as some traditions refer to it, or the chakra system.
This ancient practice dates back to civilisations like the Egyptians, Chinese, and Greeks, who used stones like lapis lazuli, jade, and quartz in rituals, healing ceremonies, and daily life, including during pregnancy and childbirth.
In modern parenting, crystal healing is used to help:
Reduce stress and parental anxiety
Support emotional processing during postpartum
Encourage mindfulness during feeding and bedtime routines
Promote patience and spiritual awareness
When raising young children, these benefits can serve as valuable tools in managing overwhelming emotions, finding moments of calm, and restoring inner balance.
The mind-body-spirit approach to parenting
Early parenthood impacts every layer of your life, not just the body recovering from pregnancy and birth, but the mind and spirit. That’s why many postpartum programs and family wellness centres now include holistic modalities like prenatal yoga, meditation, breathwork, and energy healing.
Crystal healing fits well within this integrative approach because it encourages:
Self-reflection during precious quiet moments
Daily ritual and mindfulness (even if just for 30 seconds)
Energetic support during emotional transitions
According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), about 38% of adults in the U.S. use some form of complementary and alternative medicine, including energy work like crystal healing, as part of their overall wellness [1]. Among millennial parents, this number is even higher.
While crystal healing is not a substitute for medical care or postpartum support, it can provide emotional comfort and a sense of spiritual grounding for parents during challenging transitions.
How crystals may support parents and families
1. Creating mindful moments in chaos
Working with crystals can help establish brief daily routines that ground and centre the mind. Whether it’s holding a crystal during a 2-minute morning meditation, placing one on your nightstand for better sleep, or carrying it during school pickup, these simple rituals promote mindfulness, which research shows reduces parental stress and improves emotional regulation.
2. Providing emotional comfort during difficult days
Crystals can serve as emotional anchors during challenging parenting moments, such as tantrums, sleep regressions, or postpartum mood changes. For many parents, simply holding or seeing a calming stone like amethyst or rose quartz reminds them to breathe, reset, and stay present.
3. Symbolising strength and transformation
Many parents choose crystals that symbolise personal growth and resilience. These physical tokens serve as daily reminders of strength during pregnancy, birth and parenting.
Popular crystals for parents and family wellness
Here are some commonly used crystals that parents find helpful during different stages of their journey:
Amethyst – Often called the “calming stone,” amethyst has long been associated with clarity, peaceful sleep, and emotional balance. Parents use it in nurseries and bedrooms to promote restful sleep for the whole family.
Black Tourmaline – Known for its grounding energy, this crystal is used to clear negative energy, reduce anxiety, and help create a sense of safety—perfect for new parents dealing with protective instincts.
Rose Quartz – The stone of unconditional love and compassion, rose quartz encourages healing from birth trauma, helps with bonding, and supports self-compassion during challenging parenting moments.
Citrine – Linked to joy and energy, citrine may help exhausted parents maintain positivity and find moments of sunshine even on difficult days.
Clear Quartz – This “master healer” is believed to amplify intention and support overall emotional clarity, helpful when making important parenting decisions.
Moonstone – Traditionally associated with fertility, pregnancy, and motherhood, moonstone is beloved by parents for its support of hormonal balance and intuitive parenting.
While the healing power of crystals can’t be proven through conventional science, many parents find comfort and inspiration in their use and that alone can support a positive mindset during challenging phases.
What does the science say?
Scientific studies on crystals are limited, and many researchers consider the effects to be placebo-based. However, that doesn’t mean they aren’t valuable for stressed parents.
A 2001 study published in The Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that participants who believed in the power of crystals reported feeling better emotionally and physically after handling them, even when given placebo crystals [2].
This points to an essential truth in parenting wellness: belief, intention, and mindfulness matter. If a parent feels calm, grounded, and hopeful when working with crystals during a difficult bedtime routine or postpartum anxiety episode, those feelings are valid and helpful.
Safe tips for using crystals in your family
If you’re curious about incorporating crystals into your parenting practice, here are safe, practical tips:
Choose Intuitively – Let yourself be drawn to a crystal that “speaks” to your current parenting needs. Your intuition often knows what support you need.
Use During Feeding or Pumping – Hold a small crystal while nursing or pumping to create a calming ritual. Focus on your breath and bonding intentions.
Set Family Intentions – Write down an affirmation for your family’s wellbeing, and place your crystal nearby as a visual reminder of your values.
Cleanse Regularly – Crystals are believed to absorb energy. Cleanse them monthly with moonlight, sound, or gentle running water (only if the crystal is water-safe).
Safety First – Keep all crystals out of reach of children under 3 to prevent choking hazards. Never use crystals as teething items or in cribs. Consider placing them on high shelves or in closed display cases.
Creating a crystal practice for busy parents
Morning Reset (30 seconds): Hold a grounding stone while setting your intention for patience before the kids wake up.
Naptime Restoration (2 minutes): Place rose quartz on your heart during a brief meditation while baby sleeps.
Bedtime Ritual: Keep an amethyst on your nightstand to promote restful sleep between night wakings.
Family Crystal Garden: Create a safe display where older children can learn about different stones (supervised and out of reach of toddlers).
Final thoughts
Parenting young children is not just about meeting endless needs; it’s about maintaining your own well-being, finding moments of peace, and discovering what helps you feel whole amidst the beautiful chaos. For some parents, crystal healing offers a gentle way to support that journey through symbolism, ritual, and precious moments of mindfulness.
While crystals won’t cure sleep deprivation or eliminate tantrums, they can inspire calm, deepen mindfulness, and provide emotional grounding when used alongside traditional parenting support and medical care. And in the intensity of early parenthood, those small moments of peace can make all the difference.
Remember: You’re doing a fantastic job, and any tool that helps you feel more centred and supported is worth exploring—whether it’s crystals, meditation, or simply a hot cup of coffee in peace.

5 expert-approved magnesium supplements for pregnancy
Magnesium might not be the first nutrient you reach for on the shelf, but during pregnancy and breastfeeding, it quietly does a lot of heavy lifting. From easing leg cramps to supporting your baby’s development, and helping you finally get some sleep (when you can!), magnesium is one mineral you don’t want to overlook.
Pregnant women typically need 350- 400 mg daily and breastfeeding mums need 310- 320 mg daily. That’s more than non-pregnant women because of the overdrive your body goes into to support both you and your little one.
Most of us don’t get enough magnesium through food alone, although it’s found in leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. But between pregnancy cravings, nausea and exhaustion, you’d have to be eating like a saint to hit the mark, and that is tough when you can’t smell food. So supplements can be a great way to ensure you’re getting what you need. Magnesium Glycinate is the preferred form for pregnancy and breastfeeding due to its superior bioavailability and gentle effect on the digestive system.
Why magnesium matters for pregnancy and breastfeeding
During Pregnancy
Reduces leg cramps (affects 5–30% of mums-to-be)
Supports your baby’s growth – especially cell division and bone formation
Helps lower pre-eclampsia risk in high-risk women
Regulates blood sugar (important for reducing gestational diabetes risk)
Promotes better sleep when tossing and turning becomes your nightly routine
While Breastfeeding
Supports milk production (breast milk contains around 3mg magnesium per 100ml)
Boosts recovery and energy levels after birth
Helps regulate mood and stress hormones – big for postpartum wellbeing
Prevents depletion (since magnesium passes to your baby through breast milk)
Eases fatigue and muscle recovery during those sleep-deprived early months
According to Consumer Health Digest, Magnesium promotes relaxation, regulates the sleep cycle, and ensures optimum heart health. High-quality magnesium supplements ensure better absorption, which is particularly important when you’re supporting both yourself and your baby.
Choosing trusted, third-party tested brands ensures you get effective results with safe, scientifically tested natural ingredients – crucial during pregnancy and postpartum.
What are magnesium supplements?
Magnesium supplements fill the gap when your diet doesn’t quite cut it. They usually come in capsules, powders, tablets, or even gummies, with the most common forms being Magnesium Glycinate, Magnesium Citrate, and Magnesium Oxide.
Magnesium glycinate – the gold standard for pregnancy and breastfeeding. It’s well-absorbed, gentle on the stomach, and less likely to cause digestive issues.
Magnesium citrate – good absorption and can help with pregnancy constipation, but may be too much if your tummy is already sensitive.
Magnesium oxide – higher magnesium content, but poorly absorbed and more likely to upset your stomach.
In short, supplements top up your levels so your body can keep doing its 300+ magnesium-dependent jobs, which is everything from muscle relaxation to nerve signalling to heart health.
Safety first
While magnesium supplements are generally safe, always run it past your midwife, GP, or healthcare provider first. This is especially important if you’ve got existing health conditions or are on other medications.
Ensure the supplement contains premium ingredients that are free from artificial additives. Also, check for added ingredients like fillers or preservatives, according to DermSpotlight.
Quick note: don’t go over 400mg a day from supplements. Too much can affect early breastfeeding and upset your digestive system. Food sources are fair game, though because your body knows what to do with those.

How to choose the best magnesium for pregnancy and breastfeeding
Identify your pregnancy/postpartum health goals
Always focus on your specific needs as a pregnant or breastfeeding mother. Are you dealing with leg cramps? Poor sleep? Stress? Pre-eclampsia risk? Choose accordingly.
Consider your supplement form preference:
Pregnancy nausea can make swallowing pills difficult. Consider the supplement’s form and choose powders or smaller capsules if you’re experiencing morning sickness.
Look for pregnancy-safe ingredients:
Ensure the supplement contains premium ingredients free from artificial additives, and check that all additional ingredients are safe for pregnancy. Avoid products with herbs or additives not cleared for pregnancy use.
Consider the dosage and serving size
Aim for supplements providing 200-300mg per serving, allowing you to adjust based on dietary intake and stay within the recommended 350-400mg daily total during pregnancy (310-320mg while breastfeeding).
Read reviews from other mums:
Trust brands that have positive reviews from pregnant and breastfeeding women, with visible proof of effectiveness for pregnancy-specific concerns.
Check for third-party testing and quality assurance:
Always choose supplements tested by independent labs for quality, safety, and consistent nutrient potency. This is non-negotiable during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
What are the benefits of using magnesium during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
Reduces pregnancy leg cramps
Magnesium supplements significantly help reduce the frequency and intensity of nocturnal leg cramps, which affect 5-30% of pregnant women. Multiple studies show that 300mg of magnesium daily reduces both the frequency and severity of these painful cramps.
Improves sleep and reduces stress:
Magnesium promotes relaxation and helps calm the nervous system, improving sleep quality. This is crucial when pregnancy discomfort or newborn care disrupts rest. It also helps reduce anxiety and stress levels common during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
Supports healthy foetal development
Magnesium plays a crucial role in cell division, tissue growth, and DNA synthesis – all essential for your baby’s development. It’s particularly important for skeletal development and bone formation.
May help prevent pre-eclampsia
Research shows that magnesium supplementation during pregnancy may help prevent pre-eclampsia in women at high risk (those with previous pre-eclampsia, multiple pregnancies, high blood pressure, diabetes, or obesity).
Supports bone health for mother and baby
Magnesium is essential for calcium absorption and bone health. Regular supplementation helps maintain mum’s bone density (which can be depleted during pregnancy and breastfeeding) while supporting baby’s skeletal development.
Regulates blood sugar during pregnancy
Magnesium helps regulate blood sugar levels, potentially reducing the risk of gestational diabetes. This is particularly important as insulin resistance naturally increases during pregnancy.
Supports postpartum recovery
Magnesium aids muscle recovery, reduces postpartum fatigue, supports mood regulation, and helps prevent postpartum depletion—especially important for breastfeeding mothers.
Enhances overall wellbeing
Magnesium supports over 300 biochemical reactions crucial during pregnancy and breastfeeding, including energy production, muscle function, and nervous system health.
Recommended magnesium dosage for pregnancy and breastfeeding
During pregnancy
350-360mg daily (RDA for pregnant women aged 19-30)
400mg daily (RDA for pregnant women aged 14-18)
Some research suggests 300-400mg daily for optimal benefits
Upper limit: 350mg from supplements (additional can come from food)
While breastfeeding
310-320mg daily (RDA for breastfeeding women aged 19-30)
360mg daily (RDA for breastfeeding women aged 14-18)
Remember: Approximately 3mg of magnesium per 100ml passes to baby through breast milk
Important: Always discuss dosage with your healthcare provider based on your individual needs, current magnesium levels, and dietary intake.

Research indicates that magnesium supplementation may help prevent pre-eclampsia in women at high risk (those with previous pre-eclampsia, multiple pregnancies, high blood pressure, diabetes, or obesity). Discuss this with your healthcare provider if you’re at increased risk.
When should I start taking magnesium during pregnancy?

5 pregnancy and breastfeeding-safe moisturisers for youth
Skincare isn’t just about having a daily routine. It’s vital for healthy and radiant skin, especially during hormonal fluctuations that occur during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Pregnancy skincare products used to be relegated to a tiny corner of the beauty aisle. Now, a wide range of products are available in almost any store, and the challenge has become deciding which one to use and which is safe for you and your baby.
However, when you have the right products to meet your skin’s specific needs, you can achieve long-term results, which include smoother, clearer, and more hydrated skin. This article will highlight some of the best skincare creams and moisturisers to consider, based on their distinctive advantages and how they can benefit your skin during pregnancy and postpartum.
Key highlights
Our top 5 skincare picks deliver hydration, anti-ageing, and skin barrier support – all safe for pregnancy and breastfeeding
Prioritise products with proven, nursing-safe actives like retinol alternatives, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, or ceramides
Look for gentle formulations—fragrance-free, minimal irritants, suitable for daily use and sensitive pregnancy skin
Use them in proper sequence (cleanser → serum → moisturiser → SPF) for maximum benefit.
Patch test new products, and choose according to your skin type (dry, oily, sensitive, etc.)
Why choosing the right skincare matters (especially during pregnancy & breastfeeding)
Youthful skin is a matter of selecting the right products to suit your skin type and address specific skin concerns. You can combat the issues of dryness, pigmentation, and sensitive skin with the right product selection. According to the research from Dermspotlight, “Application of the incorrect product may cause irritation, breakouts or aggravation of the already existing concerns.” Being aware of what is good for your skin will save time, money and frustration in the long run.
Zoe Diana Draelos, MD, Board-certified dermatologist, research and clinical professor, says, “Choose products that match your skin type and its specific concerns like dryness, pigmentation, sensitivity because the right formulation protects the skin barrier and speeds improvement, while the wrong product can cause irritation, breakouts or worsen pigmentation.”
We will explore the best skin care products that address various skin issues, including pore refining, hydration, soothing, and dark spot treatment. We will also take a closer look at some products worth adding to your routine.
Ingredients to avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding
Before we explore the products, here’s what to avoid in your safe skincare routine for breastfeeding moms:
It is crucial to determine your skin type before selecting products. Is your skin dry, oily, combination or sensitive? Knowing your skin type will enable you to choose the appropriate products that won’t clog or even worsen your skin. For example, if you have oily skin, look for products that are oil-free and mattifying. In the case of dry skin, the hydration and moisture-locking ingredients will be additional.
For new and expecting mums: Your skin type may have changed during pregnancy due to hormonal fluctuations. What worked before may need adjusting now.
Key steps in a proper skincare routine
A basic skincare routine involves five key steps that work together to maintain healthy skin:
Cleanse: Start with a gentle cleanser to remove dirt, oil, and impurities.
Tone: Toners balance your skin’s pH and prepare it for the next steps.
Hydrate: Use a moisturiser to replenish moisture and keep your skin soft.
Protect: Finish with sunscreen to shield your skin from harmful UV rays. For nursing moms, use mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide) instead of chemical formulas.
These steps can be adapted to suit your skin’s specific needs, but this structure provides a solid foundation for any skincare routine.

PM Routine:
Cleanse and tone
Apply WOWMD Dark Spot Serum for Sensitive Skin for targeted treatment
Use Beverly Hills MD Lift + Firm Sculpting Cream if your skin feels irritated or inflamed (check with doctor if breastfeeding)
Hydrate and lock moisture with WOWMD Hydro Balancing Gel-Cream
Tips for layering and patch testing
When using skincare products, it is always advisable to apply them in the order of thin to thick. Begin with toners, and proceed to serums, and then moisturisers. Patch testing on a small area of your skin can be helpful if you are trying new products, so you will not get irritated, particularly if you have sensitive skin.
Extra important for pregnant and nursing mums: Your skin is more sensitive during pregnancy and postpartum due to hormonal changes. Always patch test for 24-48 hours before applying the whole product.
How to choose what works for you
Match products to concerns
Select products that suit your skin’s needs. In case hydration is the issue to consider, the Hyaluronic Acid Serum or the Hydro Balancing Gel-Cream can be chosen. When you have pigmentation or dark spots, the Dark Spot Serum will address that issue.
Loss of firmness: Beverly Hills MD Cream (with doctor approval)
Sensitive skin considerations
For those with sensitive skin, consider using a range of gentle, non-irritating products. The WOWMD Dark Spot Serum and Beverly Hills MD Lift + Firm Sculpting Cream are formulated to calm and soothe the skin, making them ideal for individuals with sensitive skin.
For pregnant and nursing mums: Choose fragrance-free, minimal-ingredient formulas. Your skin may be more reactive during this time due to hormonal fluctuations.
Ultimately, investing time in selecting suitable products tailored to your skin type and concerns can have a lasting impact. The products mentioned above offer tailored solutions to various skincare needs, including hydration, pore refinement, dark spot reduction, and calming care. Begin creating your own personalised skincare schedule and have healthy, radiant skin.

The best portable laptop monitors for busy parents
As a parent entrepreneur, your work doesn’t stop when the kids come home from school. Between managing your business, helping with homework, and keeping the household running, the right tools can supercharge efficiency and productivity, which means you’ll get more done with the little time you have. I am a mum of four with multiple businesses, and my latest venture is taking up what spare time I have left. So when I’m either working at home, in the office, or in my second home office, I want to limit falling into the trap of buying laptop equipment that promises the world but delivers more frustration instead.
Today, I want to share what really works when it comes to portable laptop monitors for busy parents, and more importantly, what doesn’t, because when you’re juggling client calls during nap time or finishing proposals after bedtime, the last thing you need is unreliable tech that adds stress to your already packed day.
The reality of long work hours as a parent entrepreneur
Many parent entrepreneurs today work longer hours than they ever did in traditional employment. You start the day with coffee and school runs. As the hours pass, the tabs on the screen begin to pile up and you’ve had to respond to emails, get the mail, load the dishwasher, and attend a last-minute meeting. Notes crowd over research, and you’ve resorted to dividing the screen by four to reduce the amount of flipping between programs. You experience mind fog and attention slips away by mid-afternoon. You look at the clock, and it’s time for school pickup.
But what makes it even more challenging for us parents is that we don’t always have the luxury of working in a quiet office either. One minute you’re analysing quarterly reports, the next you’re mediating a sibling argument. Then, back to your laptop, only to find that you’ve lost track of which window had that important document.
This is where laptop screen extenders come in! They may not do your laundry for you, but they will increase productivity by 42%. And the time you save simply by being efficient is priceless!
Laptop screen extenders can optimise your workspace and help you focus during your long work stretches, especially when those hours are constantly interrupted by family life. In this article, we will explore what to look for in laptop screen extenders, as well as what to avoid when shopping for one.
Time and focus are the currency for parent entrepreneurs
We have so little of it, and when we do have it, we have to use it wisely. So much easier said than done when you are consistently fatigued, both mentally and physically.
For parent entrepreneurs, focus isn’t just about productivity; it’s about making the most of the limited time we have. When you finally get those precious few hours while the kids are at school or asleep, every minute counts. You can’t afford to waste time shuffling between windows or losing track of important information.
A product like the Mobile Pixels Trio laptop screen extender can save you from this chaos, but only if you choose the right one. Unfortunately, the market is flooded with poorly designed options that promise the world but deliver disappointment.
With a reliable extender, you get space for every task. So, you don’t need to keep shuffling the tabs. Imagine it this way:
One screen can hold the numbers for your quarterly budget
Another can display the client proposal you’re drafting
A third can carry the references and research materials
And with everything in sight, the brain can stay in flow without interruption. Undoubtedly, this flow is priceless for busy parents. It is the difference between “working ten hours and feeling crushed” or “working ten hours and still having clarity at the end”.
What issues to look out for with popular screen extenders
Before we dive into what works, let me share some feedback about a popular (and expensive) dual-screen extender that many parent entrepreneurs have wasted money on. This particular model costs around £400, a significant investment for any parent running a business.
The port placement disaster
One of the most frustrating issues with this expensive model is the poor port placement design. When you connect the cables, you end up blocking the control buttons. This means you literally cannot use the device’s functions without unplugging and reconnecting cables in an awkward, unnatural position.
Imagine you’re in the middle of an important client presentation, and you need to adjust your screen setup. Instead of a quick button press, you’re fumbling with cables while your client waits. As one reviewer noted:
“The ports, if you connect the cable, the HDMI cable, and the Type C cable in a certain way that are more natural to connect, you will block the buttons so people won’t be actually be able to press the buttons without unplugging the HDMI.”
The cable chaos problem
Another major issue that particularly affects parent entrepreneurs who need to work from different locations, like the kitchen table, bedroom, or living room, during kids’ activities is that some extenders require two separate cables: an HDMI cable and a Type-C cable.
This creates multiple problems:
Port shortage: You’re using up two valuable USB-C ports on your laptop, leaving no room for your charger or other essential devices
Portability nightmare: Carrying around two cables increases the chance of forgetting one
Setup complexity: Every time you set up, you need to connect two cables correctly
As the reviewer explained:
“They use up very important real estate space on your laptop because you’re now occupying two Type Cs. And if you’re connecting your charger with a normal work laptop, you run out of plugs.”
The weight and balance crisis
This is perhaps the most concerning issue for parent entrepreneurs, who often work on their laptops in various positions, i.e. on the bed while kids sleep nearby, at the kitchen counter while dinner cooks, or on the couch during family time.
The weight of this particular extender actually broke the laptop stands and put dangerous stress on the laptop hinges. As the reviewer discovered:
“It’s also very heavy that it’s actually broken the stands of my laptop… My dad said that it’s very bad on the hinges of the laptop as well.”
The magnetic attachment system makes the problem worse by lifting the entire laptop base, putting all the weight stress on the hinges rather than distributing it properly.
“The whole load from the base of your laptop is working on your hinges,” the reviewer explained.
The build quality disappointment
For £400, you’d expect premium build quality. Instead, this model uses cheap plastic that scratches easily and feels flimsy.
“The plastic is just going to break very easily. One of the screens has been scratched because of how they engineered the whole construction of it.”
The attachment mechanism is particularly problematic:
“It’s very flimsy to take in and out as well. That’s a big one. I really struggle to.”
More space brings calm and leads to better focus
Today, everyone talks about multitasking. However, the truth is that our brains can’t cope with it daily, especially when you’re already mentally juggling work tasks with family responsibilities. A reliable extender offers that space, as it allows the work to spread easily across the screen in an uninterrupted flow.
And, the point is not only about being faster. It is also about staying calm while working. With a clear space, your shoulders drop, your eyes stop darting back and forth, and the work feels steadier. You can also focus better, even when you are working late into the night after the kids are asleep.
What to look for in a reliable portable laptop monitor
Based on real user experiences and the needs of parent entrepreneurs, here’s what actually matters:
Single cable solution
Avoid any extender that requires multiple cables. Look for models that use a single USB-C cable for both power and video. This simplifies setup, reduces cable management, and preserves your laptop’s precious ports for other devices.
Lightweight design with proper support
The extender should be light enough not to stress your laptop hinges, but if it does add significant weight, it should include a proper stand or support system that doesn’t rely entirely on your laptop’s hinges.
Durable build quality
Skip the cheap plastic options. Look for aluminium construction or high-quality materials that can withstand daily use, travel, and the occasional accidental bump from curious little hands.
Intuitive button placement
Control buttons should be easily accessible regardless of how cables are connected. You shouldn’t need to contort your setup or unplug cables just to adjust brightness or settings.
Magnetic vs. clamp attachment
While magnetic attachment is convenient, it can create balance problems. Some of the most reliable options use adjustable clamps or stands that properly distribute weight.
Great for parents who can’t afford breaks
With a durable extender, you don’t lose momentum when your work time is fragmented. These extenders remain reliable even when used in short bursts throughout the day and far past the point when others would have given up for the day.
The hidden costs of choosing wrong
When you choose a poorly designed laptop screen extender, the real cost goes beyond the initial purchase price. Consider these hidden expenses:
Laptop repair costs
If the extender damages your laptop hinges or screen, you’re looking at expensive repairs. For many parent entrepreneurs, the laptop is the primary business tool – its failure means lost income.
Lost productivity time
Every minute spent wrestling with cables, adjusting awkward positioning, or dealing with technical issues is time stolen from either work or family. For a problematic device, you’re paying premium prices for premium frustration.
Replacement costs
When a poorly built extender breaks or becomes unusable, you’re back to shopping again. The reviewer of our expensive example concluded: “I’m very annoyed. And I would send it back.”
Creating your ideal work setup as a parent entrepreneur
The key to a successful portable monitor setup for parent entrepreneurs is thinking beyond just the screen itself. Consider your entire workflow:
Location flexibility
Your setup needs to work in multiple locations. The kitchen table for early morning work, the living room for evening catch-up, the bedroom for late-night client calls when kids are sleeping nearby.
Quick setup and teardown
When you need to clear the space for dinner or family time quickly, your setup should pack away easily without multiple cables and components.
Child-proofing considerations
Young children are naturally curious about screens and gadgets. Your setup should be stable enough that accidental bumps don’t cause expensive disasters.
Noise considerations
Some extenders have fans or make electrical sounds that can disturb sleeping children or interfere with client calls.
Laptop screen extender is a long-term companion
A reliable extender is an investment for parent entrepreneurs who plan for the long term. The best option lasts through many years of diverse use cases – from client presentations to late-night project work to mobile office setups during family vacations.
You will notice that their hinges don’t loosen, frames don’t crack, and they even carry the weight of daily work without complaint. This is the kind of endurance that matters in more than one way. Yes, it saves you money by avoiding the need for replacements. It also builds a relationship of trust. So, when a parent entrepreneur starts their work session – whether it’s a 6 AM pre-kid work block or an 11 PM catch-up session – they know their extender will perform as expected.
For parent entrepreneurs, this reliability is crucial. When you have limited time to work, equipment failures aren’t just inconvenient – they can derail entire projects and affect client relationships.
Alternative solutions worth considering
While screen extenders can be valuable, they’re not the only solution for parent entrepreneurs struggling with screen space:
External monitor setup
If you primarily work from a home office, a traditional external monitor might offer better value and reliability than a portable extender. Modern monitors are more affordable than ever, and they don’t put stress on your laptop.
When it’s time to upgrade your laptop, consider models with ultra-wide screens instead of adding an extender. This eliminates compatibility issues and cable management.
Virtual desktop solutions
Software solutions that help organise your workspace might address screen real estate issues without requiring additional hardware.
The parent entrepreneur’s decision framework
Before investing in any portable laptop monitor, ask yourself:
Where will I primarily use this? If it’s mainly at a desk, a traditional monitor might be better.
How often will I move it? More frequent movement means weight and setup complexity matter more.
What’s my backup plan? If the extender fails, how will it affect your work and deadlines?
Can my laptop handle it? Consider both the technical requirements and physical stress.
What’s the total cost of ownership? Include potential laptop damage, replacement costs, and productivity losses.
Final thoughts
Ultimately, you can see that a reliable laptop screen extender can change the way long workdays feel for parent entrepreneurs. They add more space for you to protect your focus during those precious, uninterrupted work hours. With the right screens, you get the comfort and organisation you need. Besides, they become your best partners for productivity when time is your most precious resource.
However, the market is filled with expensive options that promise more than they deliver. The example we discussed shows that a higher price doesn’t always mean better design or reliability. As parent entrepreneurs, we can’t afford to make expensive mistakes with our essential work tools.
Before making any purchase, research thoroughly, read real user reviews, and consider whether the solution actually solves your specific challenges.
The key is finding a balance between functionality, reliability, and cost that makes sense for your unique situation as a parent building a business. Sometimes the best solution isn’t the most expensive one – it’s the one that consistently works when you need it most.
You can also make the switch right away, but make it thoughtfully. Your future self, both as an entrepreneur and as a parent, will thank you for choosing tools that enhance rather than complicate your already complex life.

Why inner child healing matters for mums
Discover how healing your inner child can help you become the best parent you can be, break generational patterns, and enhance emotional balance for your entire family.
We all carry stories from our childhood, some joyful, others painful. For many mums, these emotional wounds from the past don’t just affect us; they influence how we parent our children. These wounds can manifest as mum guilt, difficulty staying calm during tantrums, anxiety about “getting it right,” or struggling to set healthy boundaries with our little ones. Often, they trace back to unmet needs during our own early development.
That’s where reparenting comes in. Reparenting is giving yourself the care, support, and guidance you may not have received as a child—so you can break generational cycles and parent from a place of healing. It’s a powerful act of self-love, a vital step toward lasting emotional wellness and becoming the mother you want to be. In this article, we’ll explore what reparenting is, why it’s so important for mothers, and how to start this healing journey while raising your children.
What does it mean to re-parent yourself as a mother?
Re-parenting yourself means becoming the nurturing, supportive, and protective figure your younger self needed, while simultaneously nurturing your own children. Instead of unconsciously passing on old patterns, you step in and offer yourself:
Emotional validation
Safety and stability
Boundaries and discipline
Unconditional love and compassion
You’re essentially healing your inner child, which is that part of you still holding onto pain, fear, or unmet emotional needs from the past, so you can parent your children from a place of wholeness rather than wounding.
Why re-parenting is vital for mothers’ mental health
1. It heals unmet childhood needs (so you don’t project them)
Many mums never learned how to self-soothe, trust themselves, or speak up for their needs. When your toddler has a meltdown, your own inner child might feel triggered. Re-parenting fills those gaps.
According to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, early childhood adversity increases the risk for mental health disorders, including depression and anxiety, later in life, and can affect parenting styles.
Re-parenting helps rewrite those internal narratives: “I’m not a good enough mum,” “I don’t matter compared to my kids,” or “My feelings are too much.”
2. It builds emotional regulation (for you and your children)
When we weren’t taught how to manage emotions healthily, we may find ourselves yelling at our kids or feeling overwhelmed by their big feelings. Through re-parenting, mothers learn how to:
Recognise and name emotions (yours and theirs)
Respond instead of reacting during challenging parenting moments
Self-soothe during stressful times (like bedtime battles or public tantrums)
These skills become the foundation you model for your children.
3. It strengthens your identity beyond “Mum”
If you didn’t receive affirmation or encouragement growing up, your self-worth may depend entirely on being the “perfect mother.” Re-parenting teaches you how to speak kindly to yourself, celebrate your efforts, and affirm your value, both as a mother AND as an individual.
4. It creates healthier family dynamics
Unhealed childhood wounds often play out in how we parent. You may become overprotective, struggle with consistency, or find yourself repeating phrases your parents said. Re-parenting helps you:
Set and honour boundaries with your children (and extended family)
Communicate needs clearly to your partner
Build trust in yourself as a capable parent
When you learn to meet your own emotional needs, you stop expecting your children or partner to fill emotional voids.
Signs you may need re-parenting as a mother
You struggle with mum guilt or feel you’re “never doing enough”
You often criticise or shame yourself about your parenting
You seek validation from other mums or social media
You fear “messing up” your kids
You feel emotionally triggered by your children’s behaviour
You notice yourself repeating patterns from your own childhood
These signs suggest that part of your emotional development may need gentle attention and support for both your sake and your children’s.
How to begin re-parenting yourself while parenting
Re-parenting is a daily practice that can happen alongside raising your children. It’s not about blaming your parents—it’s about taking responsibility for breaking cycles today.
Here are simple steps to start:
1. Connect with your inner child (during quiet moments)
During naptime or after bedtime, visualise yourself as a child. What did you look like? What were you feeling? What were you missing?
Spend time “with” this version of yourself. You can write letters to them, draw pictures, or talk to them gently in your mind.
Example: “I see you. I know you’re scared. I’m here now, and I’ll protect you, just like I protect my baby.”
2. Journal about your needs (not just your kids’)
Ask yourself:
What do I need today as a person, not just as a mum?
What would help me feel safe and supported?
What am I feeling, and why?
Writing helps you become more aware of your emotional world, which enables you to stay regulated when your children need you.
3. Create and respect boundaries (with kids and family)
Boundaries are a key part of re-parenting and healthy parenting. They help you feel safe and respected, and teach your children the same.
Start by saying no to what drains you (like unnecessary playdates) and yes to what nourishes you (like that morning coffee in peace). Remember: setting limits teaches your children self-respect by example.
4. Practice gentle self-talk (especially on hard days)
If your inner voice is harsh or critical about your parenting, it’s time to re-parent that voice. Begin speaking to yourself like you would to a fellow mom who’s trying her best.
Replace “I’m such a terrible mother” with: “I’m learning, and that’s okay.”u “I made a mistake, but I’m still a good mm.”
5. Prioritise consistent self-care (yes, even with little ones)
Re-parenting involves creating a routine that includes rest, nutrition, movement, and play, even in 5-minute increments. It teaches your inner child: “You matter enough to be cared for,” while modelling self-care for your children.
A study in BMC Psychiatry (2020) found that adults with consistent self-care practices had lower levels of anxiety and depression.
Even small acts, such as drinking water or stepping outside for fresh air, build trust in yourself.
6. Try creative expression (with or without your kids)
Drawing, painting, dancing, or singing can help you reconnect with your inner child. Do it alongside your children for double healing – they play, you heal.
You don’t need to be “good” at it – just present.
7. Consider therapy or support groups
Working with a therapist, especially one trained in maternal mental health, inner child work, IFS (Internal Family Systems), or trauma-informed care, can help you explore deeper emotional wounds while navigating motherhood. Many therapists offer virtual sessions, which are perfect for busy moms.
Real-life example: Jasmine’s story
Jasmine, 35, mother of two, spent her life chasing perfection, especially in her parenting. She feared failure and constantly compared herself to other mums. Through therapy, she realised her inner child never felt accepted unless she was achieving something.
She began journaling to her younger self during naptime, practising affirmations, and accepting that “good enough” parenting was actually great parenting.
“I used to think love had to be earned for me and from my kids,” Jasmine said. “Now I know I can give it to myself, and that makes me a calmer, more present mother.”
Final thoughts
Re-parenting yourself as a mother is one of the most healing and empowering journeys you can take for you AND your children. It helps you feel grounded, worthy, and emotionally whole, which naturally flows into your parenting.
You become the safe space you always needed and the safe space your children need. You learn to care for your emotional wounds with gentleness instead of judgment, breaking cycles that may have existed for generations.
Healing doesn’t mean forgetting the past; it means giving yourself what was missing and creating a more compassionate future for your entire family.
“You can’t go back and change your childhood, but you can create the care and love you always deserve – and pass that healing on to your children, starting now.”

Organic cotton benefits and the pros and cons for babies
A newborn’s crib sheet may look like a tiny square of fabric, but its story stretches from family mental health to the global organic textile economy. Parents across the United States, France, and beyond choose organic cotton over conventional cotton because it’s softer on sensitive skin, gentler on soil health, and kinder to the farmers who grow it.
Below, we summarise the complete picture – organic cotton farming, its advantages and disadvantages, shopping tips, and even how to pay for organic cotton (all the main ones work: American Express, Apple Pay, Diners Club, Discover, or Google Pay). Let’s dive in.
What is organic cotton?
Organic cotton comes from plants without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified (GM) seeds. Certified growers follow rigorous farming practices set out by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and the Organic Content Standard, which cover the entire supply chain—from seed and soil to spinning, dyeing, and finished products.
Organic cotton is vegan
No animal by-products, such as bone-char bleach, touch the fibre, making it a perfect plant-only choice for families following vegan values.
There are fewer organic cotton farms
Less than 1% of global cotton land is certified organic. This limited acreage explains the smaller colour range on store racks and (sometimes) the higher price tag.
The heart of organic cotton production
From crop rotation and compost fertiliser to rain-fed irrigation, organic farming protects water tables and boosts biodiversity. Fields become humming havens for bees, bats and birds—an ecological win that synthetic-sprayed plots can’t match.
Organic cotton benefits and its advantages
Chemical-Free Peace of Mind – Crib sheetswithout chlorine bleach, azo dyes, or formaldehyde do not irritate delicate skin. Babies stay more comfortable, and parents don’t have to worry as much about unexplained rashes or late-night itchiness.
Naturally Soft & Breathable – Organic cotton fibres are left longer and more intact because they skip the harsh acid baths used to “pre-soften” many conventional fabrics. The result is material that feels cloud-soft when it comes out of the package and allows air to circulate freely around a sleeping baby.
Hypoallergenic by Nature – Fewer chemical residues translate into fewer potential allergens. Parents who switch often notice a drop in eczema flare-ups and see their little ones wake less frequently to scratch or rub irritated areas.
Temperature Regulation—Organic cotton’s natural loft wicks moisture away from the skin and helps balance body temperature. Babies stay comfortably warm without overheating, even as room conditions change throughout the night.
Durability – Because their cell walls are not weakened by aggressive processing, organic cotton fibres hold up better in the wash. Sheets maintain their shape and softness cycle after cycle, outlasting many fast-fashion cotton alternatives.
Planet-Friendly—Organic production avoids synthetic pesticides and relies on healthier soil systems, leading to lower greenhouse gas emissions and cleaner waterways. Choosing these sheets supports farming methods that work with the environment rather than against it.
Ethical Supply Chain – Independent audits verify that organic-cotton farms and mills pay fair wages and provide safe working conditions. Parents can feel confident that the product offering comfort at home also contributes to dignity and security for those who made it.
Organic cotton vs cotton: the real difference
Imagine putting two crib sheets through 50 rounds of washing. One is made from conventionally grown cotton, processed with bleach, chemical softeners, and synthetic resins that can leave the fibres weak and prone to wear. The other is certified organic cotton. It skips the harsh treatments, keeping its fibres strong, smooth, and naturally intact. The result? Tests show the organic cotton holds about 25% more tensile strength. That means fewer holes, better fit over time, and a sheet that still feels soft and supportive, wash after wash.
Here’s the science:
Longer staple length – Organic crops aren’t rushed to grow bigger, faster, or cheaper. The result is a longer fibre that twists into a tougher yarn. It’s like having spaghetti instead of rice grains to braid with—more length, more hold.
No fibre-frying chemicals – Conventional cotton production uses chlorine bleach, formaldehyde resins and softening silicones that erode the cellulose microstructure. Organic skips the chemical boot-camp, so the fibres keep their natural spring.
Gentler ginning and spinning—Without defoliants, bolls open naturally, and mills can process at lower speeds, preserving fibre integrity and soil-to-sheet sustainability bragging rights.
Friction fighters – Stronger yarn resists pilling, so your once-white sheet doesn’t turn into a bobbly snowstorm after six months.
The result is a sheet that survives nighttime nappy blowouts, toddler trampoline sessions, and even a hand-me-down for baby number two. In short, choosing organic cotton isn’t just planet-kind; it’s cost-saving overall.
Organic cotton for ethical fashion
Sustainable style isn’t just a trend—it’s the future of fashion. More and more pioneering brands show us that it’s possible to dress beautifully without relying on harmful chemicals or environmentally damaging processes. With organic cotton, you get clean lines and a clean conscience. No toxic dye baths, synthetic finishes—just well-made, thoughtfully produced pieces that last.
Whether you’re building a capsule wardrobe, shopping for long-lasting baby clothes, or want to know your T-shirt didn’t harm the planet or its people, organic cotton ticks all the right boxes. It supports safer working conditions, fairer wages, and farming practices that put the planet first. It’s fashion that feels as good as it looks.
Is organic cotton better quality?
Yes—and the difference is backed by lab testing and real-world wear. Organic cotton fibres are longer, cleaner, and less damaged by processing. That means fewer impurities, stronger threads, and reduced pilling over time. Garments keep their shape better, feel softer for longer, and hold up through dozens (even hundreds) of washes.
Baby clothes, bedding, and everyday basics translate into less fading, fewer repairs, and more hand-me-down potential.
Is organic cotton better for the environment?
Absolutely. Life Cycle Assessment studies show that organic cotton production can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 46% compared to conventional cotton. But the benefits go well beyond carbon. Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides and relies on healthier soil systems that retain water and support biodiversity. That means fewer pollutants in local rivers, less water waste, and safer environments for farmers and surrounding communities.
When you choose organic cotton, you’re protecting your family’s skin, helping protect ecosystems, improving soil health, and supporting a more regenerative way of growing what we wear.
What are the disadvantages of organic cotton?
Challenge
Reality Check
Quick Fix
Higher Price
Certification and smaller yields boost costs 15–30 %.
Buy two quality crib sheets, not five cheap ones.
Wrinkling
No anti-crease resins = natural crinkles.
Embrace the relaxed linen vibe or tumble-dry on low.
Limited Availability
Fewer colour options in local shops.
Shop online for wider ranges.
Is buying organic cotton worth it?
Many parents find that the higher price tag on organic cotton balances out— and often saves money— over time.
Lower skin-care costs Families who switch to organic cotton frequently see fewer eczema flare-ups and other sensitivities. That can mean fewer prescription creams, over-the-counter lotions, and doctor appointments.
Better cost per wear A conventional baby grow that costs £20 and lasts 40 washes works out to 50p per wear. An organic alternative priced at £30 but lasting 100 washes drops to 30p per wear. Longer fibre life and stronger seams make a noticeable difference.
Less time in the waiting room Reduced skin irritation also means fewer trips to the dermatologist or GP. Even when medical care is free at the point of use, time away from work and the disruption to family routines have real costs.
Reusable for future children After repeated laundering, organic fibres hold their strength and colour, so garments and crib sheets are more likely to stay in good condition for younger siblings or to pass along to friends.
Positive environmental and ethical impact Choosing organic supports farming systems that avoid synthetic pesticides, protect waterways and provide safer working conditions for growers. Many parents value this social and environmental return alongside the financial one.
Lower healthcare spending, longer garment life, and tangible environmental benefits often justify organic cotton’s initial premium. It can deliver overall value in both the short and long term.
Material guide: reasons to choose organic cotton
Whether you’re upgrading crib sheets, tees, or French flax blends for five-star-hotel vibes, organic cotton delivers:
Comfort — breathable, moisture-wicking, and temperature-balancing.
Longevity — fabric that resists pilling and thinning.
Sustainability — traceable from seed to shelf, under the textile standard microscope.
The environmental footprint of organic cotton
Water: Rain-fed systems and healthier soils slash blue-water use by up to 91 %.
Biodiversity: Pesticide-free habitats welcome pollinators vital to food security.
Farmers’ Health: Fewer chemicals = lower medical costs and safer working conditions.
The mental health benefits of organic cotton clothing
A growing body of evidence—including a 2023 white paper from The Organic Center—connects fabric comfort, infant sleep quality, and parental well-being. This report highlighted the extensive use of chemicals in conventional cotton and underscored potential health risks. For example, U.S. cotton farming recently used over 42 million pounds of pesticides, including glyphosate, a chemical linked to cancers and neurodevelopmental issues. Conventional cotton often carries residues of pesticides and other finishes (like formaldehyde for wrinkle resistance) that can linger in fabric and irritate sensitive skin.
Breathable fabrics and improved infant sleep
Paediatric sleep experts emphasise that breathability and comfort in sleep fabrics are crucial for infants. Babies can easily overheat, which not only disrupts sleep but may pose safety risks. To prevent overheating, experts like Dr. Harvey Karp recommend dressing babies in light, breathable layers and avoiding synthetic fleece pyjamas or swaddles that trap heat.
Natural fibres such as organic cotton muslin or lightweight cotton sleep sacks allow air circulation, helping babies maintain a comfy body temperature throughout the night. Research backs up the sleep benefits of breathable natural materials: Infants sleeping with wool (a highly breathable fibre) have been found to fall asleep faster, sleep longer, and wake less often – in one study, underweight newborns on wool underlays showed 61% higher weight gain and jaundiced babies cried far less (30% vs 67%) when sleeping on wool compared to cotton.
The likely reason is better thermal regulation; as one researcher noted, wool (and by extension other breathable fabrics like cotton) keeps babies in a “thermal comfort zone,” leading to deeper, more restful sleep. These findings suggest that dressing your baby in breathable organic fabrics can tangibly improve infant sleep quality, thanks to less overheating and more consistent comfort.
Organic materials for sensitive infant skin
Baby skin is incredibly delicate, especially for little ones with eczema. That’s why dermatologists recommend soft, breathable fabrics that won’t irritate or trap heat. Organic cotton is a great choice here: no formaldehyde, azo dyes, or hidden nasties like phthalates or PFCs, which are often found in conventional baby clothes and bedding. While it’s not a treatment, organic cotton gives you a clean, gentle base layer that helps reduce flare-ups and nighttime itching. And when baby’s skin is calm and comfy, everyone sleeps a little better.
Choosing breathable, organic cotton pyjamas and bedding can help minimise discomfort from overheating or itching, promoting longer, more restful sleep for your baby—and by extension, for you. Investing in gentle, baby-friendly fabrics isn’t just about comfort; it’s a step towards better sleep and mental well-being for the whole family.
How to identify and choose organic cotton products
Not all “organic” labels are created equal. If you want to make sure you’re choosing genuinely skin-safe, sustainable cotton products for your baby, here’s what to look for when shopping:
Spot the GOTS tag
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the gold standard in organic certification. If you see this tag on a product, the cotton has met strict environmental and social criteria across every stage, from farmed to dyed and finished. So, there are no shortcuts or greenwashing—just genuine organic integrity.
Check the fibre content
Some labels might say “made with organic cotton,” but that doesn’t always mean 100%. In many cases, it could be as little as 70% organic and mixed with synthetic or conventional fibres. Look for terms like “100% organic cotton” or “GOTS-certified organic” to know exactly what you’re getting.
Explore the brand’s supply chain
Reputable, conscious brands proudly show you where and how their products are made. Head to the brand’s website for details on farming methods, factory conditions, and dye processes. If there’s little to no transparency, that’s a red flag.
Look at the country of origin
Countries like India, Turkey, and some parts of Europe are known for strong organic cotton supply chains. While this isn’t a guarantee, it can add a layer of trust, especially when paired with the proper certifications.
Check for additional certifications
Products that carry GOTS and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 labels offer double assurance. OEKO-TEX® tests for harmful chemicals, so even if a product is made from organic cotton, this additional check ensures it’s safe for sensitive skin.
In short, don’t take “organic” at face value. Flip the label, scan the certifications, and spend a minute reading up on the brand. It’s a small step that can make a big difference—for your baby’s skin, peace of mind, and the planet.
How can I be a better cotton shopper?
Choosing organic cotton is a great start, but how you shop, wash, and reuse your cotton can make just as much of a difference. Here’s how to get the most out of your cotton purchases, in a way that’s kinder to your family and the planet:
Support brands that invest in regenerative farming
Look beyond the label. Brands that work with farmers using regenerative techniques—like crop rotation, composting, and natural pest control—protect soil health and help rebuild ecosystems. When you support these brands, you’re backing a movement prioritising long-term sustainability over short-term gain.
Wash cold and line-dry whenever possible
Hot washes and tumble dryers use energy and can wear out your fabrics faster. A simple switch to cold water and fresh air drying saves water, cuts energy use, and keeps your cotton looking and feeling its best. Bonus: it’s gentler on baby clothes and bedding, too.
Repurpose what you already have
When a cotton item reaches the end of its life as clothing or bedding, don’t toss it—transform it. Old crib sheets make brilliant soft cleaning cloths, reusable wipes, or even drawstring laundry bags. Giving cotton a second life helps reduce waste and gets you more value from each purchase.
Buy less, choose well
It’s tempting to overbuy (especially with baby gear), but quality trumps quantity every time. Two organic cotton onesies that last are better than ten that shrink, fade, or fray after a handful of washes.
Ask questions
Don’t be afraid to contact brands. If a product says “organic,” ask about its certifications or where the cotton is sourced. Brands with nothing to hide will be happy to tell you more.
Being a better cotton shopper is about small, mindful choices that add up—less waste, more comfort, and greater peace of mind for your family and the planet.
The best cotton sheets: what to look for
Regarding your baby’s (or your own!) bedding, not all cotton sheets are created equal. Comfort, breathability, and durability come from the weave, weight, and certification. Here’s how to spot the good stuff:
Percale vs. sateen—know your weave
If you prefer a crisp, lightweight feel with some texture (great for warmer sleepers), go for percale. It’s breathable and matte, perfect for those hot summer nights or babies who run warm. If you’re after something smoother and silkier to the touch—think hotel luxury—sateen is your best friend. It has a subtle sheen and a buttery softness that feels lovely against the skin.
Check the GSM (grams per square metre)
Durability matters, especially when you’re washing bedding frequently. Look for sheets with a GSM of 300 or higher—the fabric is dense enough to hold up through countless washes without thinning or tearing. Anything lower may feel flimsy and wear out quicker.
Double up on certifications
For the safest sleep environment, aim for GOTS-certified bedding and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 approved. GOTS ensures the cotton is organic and ethically produced, while OEKO-TEX® tests for harmful substances. Together, they cover both environmental and health safety.
Avoid coarse or heavily processed fabric
Due to chemical softeners, some conventional sheets may feel soft at first, but that finish can wear off fast. Worse still, overly processed cotton can be too stiff or abrasive, causing discomfort, especially during active sleep, when little bodies move and rub against the fabric.
Babies with sensitive skin are particularly vulnerable to irritation from harsh dyes, resins, or wrinkle-resistant treatments.
So whether you’re dressing a newborn’s crib or upgrading your bedding, stick with soft, breathable, certified organic cotton. It’s a small switch that leads to deeper, healthier sleep, and longer-lasting sheets that feel like new, wash after wash.
Buying guide and payment tips
Most eco-shops accept American Express, Apple Pay, Diners Club, Discover, and Google Pay, so “American Express, Apple Pay / Diners Club, Discover, Google / Pay, Diners Club / Diners Discover” requests are covered.
