OXO Good Grips Salad Spinner

It has been more than 15 years since OXO introduced their first OXO Salad Spinner and the most noticeable difference is the shape of the bowl, which has a wider base, flat top and an elegant look. The non-slip ring on the base has been redesigned to do an even better job sticking to the counter when spinning at top speed. The flat top of the Spinner makes storage much more convenient in either the refrigerator or cupboard. To allow for more greens or berries to be dried, the size of the pump mechanism has been reduced to accommodate more arugula or frisee. For ultimate convenience, the underside of the lid comes apart with the simple press of a button to clean all surfaces. In addition, OXO reengineered the built-in break to work like car brakes and stop almost instantaneously. The Spinner features a soft, non-slip knob that activates the pump mechanism and is available with a green or clear basket.

OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler

OXO claim that this Swivel Peeler will be the best peeler you will ever try. The sharp, stainless steel blade glides through even the toughest fruit and vegetable skins with ease. The soft, comfortable handle cushions your hand as you peel, and is non-slip, even when your hands are wet.

OXO Good Grips Chopper

The Chopper promises to make easy work of onions, nuts and more. Press the soft knob and the blades rotate for even chopping. An internal soft bumper absorbs any shock to increase comfort and sound quality. A tab rotates within the cup to prevent food from accumulating on the side walls. The entire blade cartridge can be removed from the Chopper by simply unscrewing it, so clean up is a breeze. And the blade is symmetrical for ease of reassembly. The Chopper includes a spoon for scooping so there’s no need to leave hands smelling like onions and garlic.

Let’s see these products in action!

‘Swissriot’ (Swiss/North Cypriot inspired) Salad with Peppadew Piquante Peppers

(Just to let you know – Leyla (Mummy) is Northern Cypriot and Tommy (Daddy) is Swiss, so we always enjoy perfect traditional salads from both countries. We have taken the best from both and come up with our own tailor-made salad that has been a huge hit with everyone we know.)

Ingredients

  • 2 Eggs
  • Half an Iceberg Lettuce
  • 200g Spinach
  • 1 can of Tuna
  • 3 Plum Tomatoes
  • Half a Cucumber
  • 4 Spring Onions
  • 10 Peppadew Piquante Peppers

Italian Salad Dressing

  • ¼ Onion cut into small pieces
  • ½ Clove of Garlic Pressed or Grated
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1 Tbsp of bring from the Peppadew Piquante Peppers
  • 4 Tbsp Red Balsamic Vinegar
  • 5 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1/3 Tsp Salt
  • 2 pinches of Black Pepper

Method

Gather all your ingredients together

Place eggs in a pan and boil in water for approximately ten minutes or until hard boiled.

Wash and tear the lettuce and spinach, and add to the Good Grips Salad Spinner.

(Just to let you know – The Northern Cypriots tend to slice their lettuce into fine strips for their salad, but the Swiss like to tear their lettuce into large leaves. We’ve opted for large, teared leaves as we believe it adds to the whole personality of the salad.)

Grab the tomatoes and half them before placing them in the Good Grips Chopper to chop them up nicely into little pieces. Place in the Good Grips Salad Spinner.

Trim off each end of the spring onions and chop finely using the Good Grips Chopper. Place in the Good Grips Salad Spinner.

Use the Good Grips Swivel Peeler to peel the cucumber and add to the Good Grips Chopper to chop up the cucumber finely. Place in the Good Grips Salad Spinner.

Open a can of Tuna, drain the liquid, and add the tuna flakes to the Good Grips Salad Spinner, using a fork.

Add 10 Piquante Peppers from their jar to the Good Grips Salad Spinner. Be sure to keep some of the juice in the jar for the salad dressing!

At this point, I would check the eggs, which should be hard boiled by now. Pour out the hot water and immediately refill the pan with cold water to set the eggs for peeling. Use an egg slicer to slice the eggs and place in the Good Grips Salad Spinner.

(Just to let you know – If you spin a hard boiled egg on a counter, it should spin really fast. If it’s not boiled yet, the egg will spin slowly.)

Take half an onion and chop in half before placing in the Good Grips Chopper to chop the onions finely. Add to the Good Grips Salad Spinner. Grate a clove of garlic with a grater and place in the Good Grips Salad Spinner. Save ¼ of the onions and garlic for the salad dressing.

The Salad Dressing

Use a small pot for the salad dressing. I used the bottom part of the Good Grips Chopper to make the salad dressing.

Juice half a lemon, and add to the pot, along with the onions and garlic you saved.

Place 1 tablespoon of the Peppadew Piquante Pepper juice from the jar into the pot and stir well.

Add 2 tablespoons of Balsamic Vinegar to the pot.

Add 3 tablespoons of Olive Oil to the pot.

Add 1 tablespoon of salt and 2 pinches of black pepper to the pot. Mix all the ingredients very well and store in the fridge, ready for when you serve the salad.

When you are ready to serve the salad, pour the salad dressing over the salad.

Spin the salad, using the Good Grips Salad Spinner, or mix well with a large spoon.

Your salad should look a little like this:

Enjoy your salad!

How did the products get on?

OXO Good Grips Salad Spinner

The Salad Spinner has style and spins out salad really well. The bowl is huge, so it takes up a lot of space in the cupboard, but it’s a vital kit for a salad lover, or a person who likes to cook larger dishes.

My boys absolutely loved the spinner and pump action, which is well-designed and easy to use. The unique spinner drains off water, so salad leaves are left almost dry for a few days in the fridge. All you need to do is to build up the momentum on the spinner and press the ‘break’ button when you don’t need to spin the salad anymore.

Easy to clean and dry, compared to others. You can lock down the push mechanism at the top to fit into the fridge nicely.

OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler

Absolutely fantastic swivel peeler, which literally glides over vegetables’ skin and peels them off in one fell swoop. Easily the best peeler I’ve ever laid my hands on and a definite must by all round! It makes peeling vegetables an absolute breeze and you don’t actually mind doing it either because its fatter grip and non-slip handle makes it so easy and quick to peel spuds and veg. Well worth the money!

OXO Good Grips Chopper

The chopper struggled a little bit with chopping the vegetables as it got stuck on the way back up. A firm thrust upwards managed to un-wedge the blade though. Having said that, the chopper has drastically reduced the time it would have taken to chop the vegetables yourself and the added is bonus is you don’t get the smell of onion and garlic on your hands afterwards, which is always a pain to get off.

When finishing chopping the items, you pull the black rubber bottom away in order to access your chopped food. I wouldn’t say this is the best chopper in the world as it does take a few firm pumps to chop the veg. The chopper would benefit from a slightly sharper blade and less hand action for a finer finish.

What did I like most about the Good Grips products?

Definitely the Swivel Peeler, which stood out from the rest with its top notch quality.

What to watch out for:

Be sure to not chop your fingers off when trying to bring the chopper’s blade back up. Sometimes it flings up unexpectedly!

Rating:

OXO Good Grips Salad Spinner

4 out of 5 – Stylish and sturdy, but oversized for my small kitchen. It is the perfect kit to use to make a salad to accommodate a large family, but for a family of four (where 3 of them don’t eat salads), it’s a teeny bit too big for me.

OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler

5 out of 5 – Easily the best swivel peeler I have ever laid hands on and if something actually makes me enjoy peeling potatoes and skinning vegetables then it gets a 5 out of 5 from me!

OXO Good Grips Chopper

3.5 – Not quite average enough to award a 3 stars, but not sharp enough to award the chopper a 4 stars. The chopper itself is good quality, but the blade is just a little too blunt to chop through most vegetables with harder skins (unless you’re Arnold Schwarzenegger, in which case, you can make this thing chop through wood!)
