Grey Birlea Balmoral Fabric Super King Upholstered Bed Frame Review
Until recently our large family of five have been coping with a small double TV bed, which has been great for the days when we have wanted to chill with the family. However, one parent would end up on the floor or squashed into the corner while the kids took over the bed.
We were also regularly greeted with the kids coming into our bed during the night or when I breastfed my daughter lying down, she would take up half the bed horizontally until she was ready to be transported to her bed.
We knew it was time to upgrade to not just a kingsize bed, but a super king-size bed, so the parents had space when the kids wanted to get in and lounge with us.
Recently we were provided with a Birlea Balmoral Fabric Grey Fabric Bed for review and we’ve had so much fun with space and comfort since!

The Grey Birlea Balmoral Fabric Super King Upholstered Bed Frame is very comfortable. The grey velvet frame is so soft and the large headboard is very big and sturdy – so comfortable in fact, my 14-month-old daughter likes to put her whole face on the velvet when she’s lying down!

The Grey Birlea Balmoral Fabric Super King Upholstered Bed Frame is very easy to put together and is strong and durable. The grey velvet fabric has such an opulent feel and the large headboard makes the whole bed look very grandeur and royal. The colour is lovely too.

There are a few gaps around the mattress which may pose a safety hazard but this may be more down to the size of the mattress and less likely to be the bed frame’s fault. What is my overall opinion of the Grey Birlea Balmoral Fabric Super King Upholstered Bed Frame?
The Birlea Balmoral Fabric Super King bed is grand, soft, sturdy and comfortable – there’s so much space for lots of little and large bodies and the velvet feels so extravagant. The frame is sturdy and strong and it gives you that peace of mind during the night that the slats won’t suddenly break and cause a dip.
I have had some great nights sleep on the bed and my daughter has fed comfortably before transitioning back to her bed. The bed would have benefited from some side drawers to place bedsheets in but Mattressman stock beds with side storage. And it would have been nice to have a range of colours to choose from.
Overall Motherhood Diaries verdict
(Ratings out of 5 – 5 being excellent and 1 being terrible)
Ease of building:
5/5 – My husband had more trouble disassembling our old TV bed than reassembling the new bed, which took no time at all – even our eight year old got involved and found it easy. As long as you have the instructions to hand and you’re organised, there’s no reason why you can’t build this bed yourself. Don’t forget that you need two people to carry the bed frame to the room, however, hubby managed to do this on his own.
Ease of use:
5/5 – Very easy to use and so comfortable to sleep in. I love the velvet feel and it just feels super plush for the price it is (currently only £339!)
Fits the purpose:
4/5 – We wanted a super size bed and we got it! We are missing the side storage though – that would have been a real benefit.
Style:
4/5 – I would have preferred the option to go for a black or a red frame but I’m happy with the grey. The headboard is so large and robust, and it just brings grandeur to the bed.
Robustness/Durability:
4/5 – I would say it’s very sturdy and durable but we did get a bit scared when the boys started jumping on the bed, fearing that one of the slats would break. I don’t think it’s strong enough to withstand repeated force from two alpha male boys, but it can house a family of five lying/sitting down for long periods.
Value for money:
5/5 – Super value for money! At just £339, you’re getting luxury for wooden/metal bed frame prices. I wouldn’t hesitate to get this bed now while the huge sale is on!
Overall rating:
4.5/5 – There are some great reviews online and it’s easy to see why. This bed is super comfortable, very sturdy and super-sized, so it fits five people perfectly. I would have given this a 5 out of 5 if I had the option to choose the colour and get some side storage but this can easily be fixed by selecting other beds in the range that fits your preference.
